BAYANI and KABAYANIHAN

• A hero or bayani in Tagalog is

somebody that saves lives
• The essential trait of a hero is BRAVERY

• Being called a hero does not require sacrificing
his/her life for the cause or for the country.
• Simple acts of serving people are acts of
“KABAYANIHAN” and that makes a person
“BAYANI” at present

• Our country’s national hero.
• He fought and sacrificed himself for the freedom of our
nation.
• He was brave enough to write and express his thoughts
against the abusive Spanish Colonials that enlightened
the minds of the Filipino people, resulting in the
Philippine Revolution and later acquiring our
independence and freedom.

• Rizal was executed for the crime of
rebellion, and the Philippine Revolution,
inspired by parts by his writings, broke out

The American had passed the criteria
for a National Hero, that made Rizal
the top choice:
1. He must be a Filipino.
2. He is already dead.
3. He displayed unconditional love for his
country.
4. He was a low temper.
5. He has died dramatically.
 “Jose Rizal became a national hero of the
Philippines as a reformist who advocated
peacefully for liberty rather than violent means.
He was the forerunner of Gandhi, and along
with Sut Yat Sen and Tagone. The attrition of
colonialism was evidence of his work. Who
made Rizal our foremost national hero?”

• Dr. Rizal (1861-1896), was the greatest
hero and martyr of our country.
• His name is a byword in almost every
Filipino home while his picture adorns
the postage stamp and paper money of
most extensive circulation.
As the biographer, Rafael Palma said:
“The doctrines of Rizal are not for one epoch but
all epochs. It signifies the immortality if Rizal’s life,
works, and good character. Also, as our beloved
country’s National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal will
remember, forever. The fruits of his exceptional
dedication and conviction to his life’s purpose are
seen in our everyday lives. If he had not, and among
other note-worthy heroes of our history fought for our
well-deserved freedom, maybe we will still be in the
hands of our unjust colonizers. His “excellent qualities
and merits” made him our foremost National Hero.
Progressive Education
• Advocated and practiced the principal that
the school is integral in working and
promoting the well-being of the community
all at the same time.
Social Entrepreneurship
• Rizal formed Dapitan’s first farmer’s cooperative, the
Sociedad de Agriculture Dapitanos (SAD), where
capital was to be provided by Socios industriales
(Industrial Partners) and Socio Accionistas (Share
Holders).

• January 1, 1895 – the cooperative aimed to

improve/promote agricultural products, obtain their
profits for them, and provide capital.
Community Development
• Rizal developed Dapitan’s first park, complete
with street lamps and a garden in island of
Mindanao.
• He built a one-doctor hospital and people of
Dapitan were not not charge for any consultation.
• Jose Rizal is not only admired for possessing
intellectual brilliance but also for taking a
stand and resisting the Spanish colonial
government.

• Rizal always remembered for his

compassion and towards the Filipino people
and country.
• While in Barcelona, Rizal
contributed poems, essays,
allegories, and editorials to the
Spanish newspaper, “La
Solidaridad”.
• However, among his best works, two novels
stood out:
1.Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not)
2.El Filibusterismo (The Reign of Greed)
Rizal Awakened the Mind and Perspective of
Filipinos Towards Nationalism

• As more Filipinos read the books, their

eyes are opened to the truth that they were
suffering unspeakable abuses in the hands
of the friars.
