Adverbs of frequency

Adverbs of frequency are words used to express the

periodicity of some actions

Always frequently generally hardly ever

infrequently never normally

Occasionally often rarely regularly

Seldom sometimes usually

Position of the adverbs in the
phrase
We usually put these adverbs in the middle of the sentence, between the subject
and the verb:

- I often go to the cinema.

- She sometimes visits me at home.
- We usually drink coffee.

REMEMBER: The adverb goes BEFORE the verb:

- I usually have cereal for breakfast.

- She sometimes* plays football.

*The only exception is Sometimes, that can start a phrase:

Sometimes She plays football.
Adeverbs of frequency with the verb to be
When we use the verb to be we place the adverb after the verb to be, like this:

- Carl and Peter are usually angry
- Sally is almost always serious.

If there is a negation, the adverb goes after the negation:

- Danny isn't usually nice.
- You aren't often at home.
