Topic 3: Direct Stress Distribution due to Bending

If the beam cross section is

an axis of symmetry about any of
the axis, Product moment of
Inertia, Ixy is zero – Principal axes.

The value of direct stress at a point in the cross section of a beam subjected to
bending depends on the position of the point, the applied loading, and the geometric
properties of the cross section.

In symmetrical bending theory,
The x axis becomes the neutral axis when My =0 (Vertical loading)
The y axis becomes the neutral axis when Mx =0. (Horizontal loading)

The position of the neutral axis depends on the form of the applied loading as well as the geometrical
properties of the cross section.

Mx =1500 Nm and My =0 ----- Vertical plane loading (only Mx and no angle “Ɵ”)

Refer the moment of inertia Ixx, Iyy, and Ixy from the Moment of inertia calculator.

σz = 1.5y − 0.39x

@ point F, coordinates X, Y with respect to the centroid are, X= 8mm, Y=-66.4mm

σz,max = −96N/mm2 (compressive)

Principal moment of Inertia (IUU & IVV):
The moment of inertia of an area about its principal axes are known as principal moment of
inertia.
The bending moment about any other axis (except principal axes) in known as UNSYMMETRICAL
BENDING.

y
tan 2Ɵ = 2Ixy / (Iyy – Ixx) U
IUU = {0.5*(Ixx+Iyy)} + {0.5*(Ixx-Iyy)sec 2Ɵ}
Ɵ
IVV = {0.5*(Ixx+Iyy)} - {0.5*(Ixx-Iyy)sec 2Ɵ} V
IUU + IVV = Ixx + Iyy

Ɵ
U = x cos Ɵ + y sin Ɵ
V = y cos Ɵ – x sin Ɵ x
MUU = M sin Ɵ
MVV = M cos Ɵ
