Instructional Response
Drivers Behind Increased Failure Rate

- Students are navigating new learning environments

- Some student learning styles may not be a good fit for online learning
- Difficult to learn procedures and content at the same time
- More difficult for students to access supports
- Content is proceeding at the same rate
- Student engagement has been a challenge
High School Next Steps

- Organizational meeting was held with High School principals on 10/30

- Individual Failure discussions were held the week of 11/2 with traditional
high school principals to discuss next steps to decrease failure rates
- Goal is to decrease failure rate and potential retention rates and negative
impacts to graduation
Strategies for Failure Reduction

- Continued and increased communication efforts from school staff to students and
parents
- Counselors are scheduling student focus groups to collect student voice on what is
working for them and what is not working
- Recommend using the state graduation criteria of 22 credits versus the New
Hanover County Schools criteria of 28 credits. (Waiver needed.)
- Implement 50 as the minimum score for student work.
- Utilize mastery based grading if it supports student passing the course
- Proposed possibility of bringing seniors at risk of not graduating back 4 days a week
Middle School Next Steps

- Middle school principals are working on failure reductions in similar ways

- Middle school courses are year long
- Middle school promotion and retention is a different process.
