INDEX
DC Machines are electrical machines which convert one form of energy to other.
They are classified into 2 types
DC Motor (Converts Electrical Energy to Mechanical Energy)
DC Generator (Converts Mechanical Energy to Electrical Energy)
OPERATION OF DC MACHINES
DC GENERATOR
A DC Generator works on the principle of Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction. The
nature of emf induced is dynamically induced emf. Here the conductor is moved in a magnetic
field so that flux lines are cut by the conductor thus emf is induced and direction of induced
current is given by Flemings Right Hand Rule.
When a coil is rotated such that its axis of plane is perpendicular to the magnetic field, emf
induced is in the form of alternating voltage in the windings. The alternating voltage is
converted into direct or constant voltage by the commutator. Hence when a load is connected to
the terminals, direct current flows through the load. Consider, in a DC Generator, the coil is
rotated in anticlockwise direction inside the magnetic field.

Yoke:
• It is the outermost cylindrical part. It serves for three purposes,
• It acts as a supporting frame. It supports the magnetic poles and the field windings inside and the accessories outside.
• It provides a path for magnetic flux.
• It supports the Rotor.
• It is made up of Cast Fe or Steel.
Main Pole:
⦁ The pole shoes and pole core are made up of Cold Rolled Grain Oriented (CRGO) laminated Silicon Steel to reduce eddy and Hysteresis
losses. Steel is cold rolled since in provides a homogenous magnetizing characteristics.
⦁ The poles are fixed to the yoke by bolts.
Inter Pole:
Inter Poles are small additional poles located between the main poles. They are similar main pole but have a constant air gap which makes
flat surface. They are also called as Commutating pole or Compensating pole. They are made of CRGO steel.
Accessories:
⦁ Base Plate/ Feet: Enables the DC machine to be conveniently placed on the floor.
⦁ Lifting eye: Used to lift the DC machine and transfer it from one place to another.
⦁ Terminal Box: Contains the output terminals where the load can be connected.
Field Winding:
The field coils are wound on pole cores and are supported by pole shoes.
⦁ Main Pole Winding:
These windings are connected in series so that on excitation it creates alternate pole pairs.
⦁ Inter Pole Winding:
These windings are connected in series or parallel as per the design specified.
Rotor Construction
Armature:
The armature of DC machine consists of shaft, armature core & windings
⦁ The DC rotor core includes stamping. The stampings are open and made up of Silicon Steel. The stamping dimensions
are specified in design as per the rating of machine. Generally stamping thickness is about 0.5mm (Thin Stamping i.e.
without insulation) - 0.8 (Thick Stamping i.e. with lamination) mm thickness.
⦁ The windings are of two types, Lap winding and Wave winding.
⦁ The shaft is fixed to the stampings with the help of core key. Shaft is made up of Mild Steel.
Commutator:
⦁ It converts alternating emf into direct current in the external circuit. Brushes are placed on Commutator segments.
brushes collect current from conductor via commutator segments to external load.
Bearing:
Roller Bearing and Ball Bearing are made up of High Carbon Steel. They serve 2 purposes,
⦁ Reduce frictional losses.
⦁ Transfer of mechanical energy.
