The Message of

CROSS
Mark 15:20-39
Mark 15:20-39
20
And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe
and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify
him.
The Crucifixion of Jesus
21
A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander
and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and
they forced him to carry the cross. 22 They brought Jesus to the
place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the
skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he
did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes,
they cast lots to see what each would get.
25
It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The
written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF
THE JEWS.
Mark 15:20-39
27
They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one
on his left. [28] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him,
shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to
destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 come down from
the cross and save yourself!”31 In the same way the chief priests
and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He
saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this
Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that
we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped
insults on him.
The Death of Jesus
33
At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the
afternoon.
Mark 15:20-39
34
And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud
voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God,
my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
35
When some of those standing near heard this, they said,
“Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36
Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a
staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone.
Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37
With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.
38
The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to
bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of
Jesus, saw how he died,he said, “Surely this man was the Son of
God!”
Introduction
Today, I would like to declare the message of the
cross. It is not a weak message or it is not a foolish
message. It is a message filled with the awesome
power and wisdom of ALMIGHTY GOD.
Let the message of the cross speaks to your heart
today. If you are saved, rejoice in what God
accomplish at the cross. If you are not saved, you
really need to hear this message today.
Let’s take these verses we have read together and
examine

1
Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of
the LORD been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender
shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or
majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we
should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a
man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom
people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low
esteem. 4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet
we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and
afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was
crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us
peace was on him  and by his wounds we are healed.

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered
the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a
scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it
on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of
him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30 They spit on
him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31 After
they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on
him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying,

“Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.

4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am

bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against

him.” 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,

Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!” John 19:2-5

Why would He endures this kind of death? There is
only one answer. His LOVE for his lots of sheep.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were
still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for
us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
1John 3:16
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the
unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but
made alive in the Spirit. 1 Peter3:18
May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through
which[a] the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

They may have been referring to Him raising

When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud

A Message of Traged
After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to
death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will
come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come
like a flood: War will continue until the end, and
desolations have been decreed. Daniel 9:26
The cross was never “PLAN B” but it has a
great PURPOSE.
“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say
that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the
world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth
listens to me.”

A Message of Traged

But the cross for the JEWS was rejected.

But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the

time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the
Jews’? ”They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!”
Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising. John 18:39-40
A Message of Traged
When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to
them, “Here is the man!”  As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they
shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for
me, I find no basis for a charge against him.” The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a
law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,  and he went back inside the
palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.  “Do
you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free
you or to crucify you?”

Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from
above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”  From
then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this
man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”

When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place
known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaicis Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of
Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the
Jews.  But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify
your king?” Pilate asked.
“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.  Finally Pilate handed him over
to them to be crucified. John 19:5-16

Mark 15:26-32
A Message of Traged

The Cross reminds us that MAN is hopeless

apart from God’s intervention.
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in
which you used to live when you followed the ways of this
world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is
now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived
among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and
following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by
nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for
us, God, who is rich in mercy.

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that
in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2Corinthians 5:21

A Message of Transfe

His righteousness is transferred to us

and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my

own that comes from the law, but that which is
through faith in[a] Christ—the righteousness that
comes from God on the basis of faith.
Philippians 3:9
A Message of Transfe
Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be
guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but
also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. 17 As it is
written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” [a] He is our father in the sight
of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into
being things that were not.
18
Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many
nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” [b] 19 Without
weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since
he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he
did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was
strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God
had power to do what he had promised. 22 This is why “it was credited to him as
righteousness.” 23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him
alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe
in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was delivered over to death
for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
Romans 4:16-25
A Message of Transfe
Don’t miss the message of the cross! If you
are lost today, you are under the wrath of
GOD.
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but
whoever does not believe stands condemned already
because they have not believed in the name of God’s
one and only Son. John 3:18
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but
whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s
wrath remains on them. John 3:36

A Message of Triump
The price for sin had been paid and by then
God was eternally satisfied.
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is
finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up
his spirit. John 19:30
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ
Jesus:  Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with
God something to be used to his own advantage, rather, he made himself
nothing  by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human
likeness,  And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled
himself by becoming obedient to death—  even death on a cross!
Philippians 2:5-8
A Message of Triump
The price for sin had been paid and by then
God was eternally satisfied.
The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only
to take it up again.  No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of
my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to
take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”
John 10:17-18
A Message of Triump

The words of JESUS from the cross were not

the words of a “victim” but the shout of a
“victor”.

He did not say “I am finished”, but

rather he uttered
“It is finished”.
A Message of Triump
When Jesus died on the cross, His death signaled
the defeat of three terrible enemies of lost
humanity.

His death signaled the defeat of Satan.

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that
they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of
Christ, who is the image of God. 2Corinithians 4:4
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their

who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— Hebrews
2:14
A Message of Triump
When Jesus died on the cross, His death signaled the defeat
of three terrible enemies of lost humanity.

His death signaled the defeat of Sin.

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and
death through sin, and in this way death came to all people,
because all sinned. Romans 5:12
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
“Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
John 1:29 Christ would have had to suffer many times since the
Otherwise
creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the
culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of
himself. Hebrews 9:26
A Message of Triump
When Jesus died on the cross, His death signaled the defeat
of three terrible enemies of lost humanity.

His death signaled the defeat of Separation.

But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins
have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. Isaiah
59:2
For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him
through the death of his Son, how much more, having been
reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Romans 5:10
If only there were someone to mediate between us, someone to
bring us together, Job 9:33
A Message of Triump
When Jesus died on the cross, His death signaled the defeat
of three terrible enemies of lost humanity.

His death signaled the defeat of Separation.

For there is one God and one mediator between God and
mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 1 Timothy 2:5
