Respiration and

Photosynthesis

Plants do both!
The process by which living
organisms convert chemical bond
energy into ATP.
Cellular
Respiration Two forms of cellular respiration:
Aerobic respiration – O2 is final
electron acceptor
Anaerobic respiration – O2 is not
final electron acceptor
Aerobic Respiration
Stoichiometric Equation:
C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O + 30-32 ATP + heat

• There are 3 main steps to aerobic respiration:

– Glycolysis (also a step in anaerobic respiration)
– Krebs Cycle (The Citric Acid cycle)
– Oxidative phosphorylation
• Step 1 of aerobic
respiration

• Occurs in cytoplasm
• Glucose broken down
into 2 molecules of
pyruvate
• 2 ATP used & 4 ATP
produced
Glycolysis • Net gain of 2 ATP
• 2 NADH produced
Kreb’s Cycle

• Step 2 of aerobic respiration

• Occurs in mitochondrial matrix

• First, pyruvate converted into
2 acetyl CoA
• For the 2 acetyl CoA that are
part of the Kreb’s cycle:
– 4 CO2
– 2 ATP
– 6 NADH
– 2 FADH2
• Step 3 of aerobic
respiration
• Occurs in inner
mitochondrial membrane
• Electron transport chain
(ETC) and chemiosmosis
• ETC: Electrons move along
series of membrane
proteins, slowly giving up
energy, creating H+
gradient.

Oxidative • Chemiosmosis: ATP

produced from energy
Phosphorylation released when H+ ions flow
through ATP synthase.

Anaerobic
Respiration

Different from aerobic

respiration
• Only two steps
1. Glycolysis
2. Fermentation
– Two types:
• Alcoholic
• Lactic Acid
• Alcoholic fermentation
– End product is
ethanol
– 2 CO2 produced
– Bread, beer, wine

• Lactic acid fermentation

– End product is lactic
acid
– Yogurt
