Chapter-5 Great City…Terrible Places

•From perspolis to isfahan,

•From beiljing to rome,

•Building involves two essential conditions:

•Firstly an economic system which concentrates power and decision-making
•And secondly at the centre of that decision-making,leaders with the vision, the taste and the political
will to deploy these resources intelligently.

•Fatehpur sikri-one of the greatest indicator civilization.

Chapter-5 Great City…Terrible Places

•https://www.slideshare.net/kitang007/town-planning-in-athens The placement of buildings were

decided on natural factors such as the morphology of the land• For eg. The theatres were generally
built around a slope to provide natural seating.• The Agora was built over a flat surface.• The houses
were generally placed along the southern slope and part of Acropolis facing the sea.  Demand for
regularity.• Acropolis was the initial core. Some main streets started at its entrance, as well as from the
road immediately surrounding it, proceeded radially throughout the city and came to an end at the city
wall gates. In doing so, they left some free areas, the most important of which was Agora.

Mohenjo-daro has a planned layout with rectilinear buildings arranged on a grid

planhe sheer size of the city, and its provision of public buildings and facilities,
suggests a high level of social organization. The city is divided into two parts, the
so-called Citadel and the Lower City. The Citadel – a mud-brick mound around 12
metres (39 ft) high – is known to have supported public baths, a large residential
structure designed to house about 5,000 citizens, and two large assembly halls.
The city had a central marketplace, with a large central well. Individual
households or groups of households obtained their water from smaller wells.

Ex: arabian gulf,a large proportion of development is in the hands of

•. The architecture of the area is reminiscent of the old Bombay, fact
highlighted by buildings like, National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA),
Regal Cinema, Prince of Wales Museum (now Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj Museum) and Cusrow Baug.[12] Plus the area is also hub of
various art galleries, which makes this area a natural destination for
artist community. Apart from upmarket retail showrooms, and small
shops dealing in electronic goods, cosmetics, and music, it a has
pavement book stall dating back several decades,[13] besides having
numerous small shops and footpath outlets selling everything from
artifacts to shawls, carpets and minor antiques to slippers of all kind,
which make tourists, backpackers and local from South Mumbai, throng
the area through the year
