INTRODUCTION TO
COURSE
■ Participation & Attendance: Class participation refers to your regular class attendance
and contribution to class discussions. Three absences will result in 2 points deduction on
your final score.
■ Course work 1: Deadline is on the 8th week of Academic year. Papers submitted late for
the deadline will receive 2 points deduction. Assignments: Reading assignment 3 in
each chapter will be counted as course work and will be checked constantly.
■ Mid terms: You will be given 3 separate short quizzes during the half semester. The
highest scored two quizzes will be evaluated at the end of the semester.
■ Final test: You will be given a final test scored 30 points at the end of the semester.
There is no excuse for the final test!!!

Strategy 1:
Scanning for academic vocabulary
SCANNING
Scanning is a skill that reader use to find specific information quickly. When readers scan,
they look for keywords or parts of the text that stand out. Readers want to find the key
information for a specific purpose. Sometimes readers just want to find a telephone number,
for example, and thus they look in a telephone book for just one number.

Scan through the pages of Reading selection 2, starting on page 14, to find and preview
these AWL words. The words may appear more than once. Write down the paragraph
number next to the word the first time it appears.

- To read selections more than one time
- Every time you read a selection, read for a different purposes
- Look for an overview of the topic, do not read it line by line.
- Try to understand the general subject area and main idea.
