Realistic Fiction
Realistic fiction is made up of stories that
could really happen. Contemporary
realistic fiction is realistic fiction that is
set in modern times.

Historical Fiction
• Historical fiction books take
place during a certain time in the
past.
• Often the setting is real, and the
characters are made-up or
fictional.
• Sometimes the setting is fictional
and the characters are real.

Historical fiction is made up
of stories that take place in a
certain time and place in the
past. Real historical figures
and settings may be
included in a fiction story.

Folklore includes stories, myths, and
fables that people told one another over
the years. Later the stories were written
down.
Folk Tale
• Told in many different versions by many
different people
• Original storyteller is unknown
• Characters are animals that act and
speak like people
• Repetition
• Use of the number three
Fable
•Characters are simpler than real
people - they may be completely
greedy, completely wicked , or very
gentle

Tall Tale
• Extraordinary person - the main character is
better at things than an ordinary person

• Exaggeration – makes something greater or bigger


than it really could be

animals or characters with magical powers.
There’s usually a conflict between good and
evil.

Mysteries are stories that have a real
setting and a problem to be solved
that includes clues, distractions, and
an answer to the problem.

Poetry is language written with rhythm,
figurative language, imagery, sound
devices and emotionally charged
language.

Major Types of Poetry


Lyric Poetry
Narrative Poetry
Concrete Poetry
Poetry
Poetry is verse written to inspire
thoughts and feelings in the reader. It
often uses rhyme and rhythm, or it can
be written in free verse.
Lyric Poem
Lyric poem is a highly musical verse
that expresses the observation and
feelings of a single speaker.
Narrative Poem
Narrative Poem is a story told in
verse. Narrative poems often have
all the elements of short stories,
including characters, conflict, and
plot.
Concrete Poem
Concrete Poem is one with a shape that
suggests its subject. The poet arranges the
letters, punctuation, and lines to create an
image or picture, on the page.

Drama is a story written to be


performed by actors. Although a
drama is meant to be performed,
one can also read the script, or
written version, and imagine the
action.
