Simple past

Simple past
When we work with the past simple we have to divide the verbs into two
groups
(Cuando trabajamos con el pasado simple tenemos que dividir los verbos en
dos grupos)

- Regulars Verbs - Irregular Verbs

 How to know if a verb is regular or irregular? there is no rule we can use, we just
have to use memory and learn a list of regular and irregular verbs
 (¿como saber si un verbo es regular o y irregular? no hay ninguna regla que
podamos usar, simplemente tenemos que usar la memoria y aprendernos un
listado de verbos regulares y irregulares )
Regular Verbs
Examples :

I cooked chicken for lunch.


They washed the dishes.
We walked to school.
They planted flowers out side.
Irregular Verbs
Examples:
 We drink (drank) milk in the mornig.
I hive (have) lots of hugs to my daughter.
 We eat (ate) pizza for dinner.
Regular Verbs:

Rule #1: Examples:
• Stop – Stopped
- One syllable verbs. • Drop – Dropped
- If the verb ends in one vowel • Grab – Grabbed
• Beg – Begged
and one consonant, doublé the
consonant and add ”ed”.

Rule #2:
- One – syllable verbs. Examples:
• Help – Helped
- If the verb ends in two consonants don’t • Word – Worked
doublé the consonant. • Harm – Harmed
• Jump – Jumped
Rule # 3: Example:
- If the ver ends in two vowels • Wait – Wait ed
and one consonant don’t • Need – Needed
doublé the consonant. • Clean – Cleaned

Rule # 4: Examples:
• Deserver - Deserverd
 If a verb ends in “e” just add “d”. • Argue - Argued
• Guide - Guided
• Share - Shared
Rule # 5:
Examples:
- If the verb ends in “y”.
• Copy – Copied
Delete the “y” and add “ied” • Study – Studied
• Marry – Married
• Multiply – Multiplied

Examples:
Rule # 6 : • Pray - Prayed
- If the verb ends in “ay”, “ey”, • Obedy - Obeyed
• Enoy - Enoyed
“oy”, “uy”, just add “ed”. • Play - Played
Rule # 7: Examples:
- Two or more syllables. • Happen - Happened
- If the last syllable is not • Visit - Visited
stressed, do not double • Remember - Remembered
• Punish - Punished

- Two or more syllables. • Prefer - Preferred
- If the last syllables is stressed, • Refer - Referred
• Regret - Regretted

- If a verb ends in “w” or “x”, • Chew - Chewed
just add “ed”. • Glow - Glowed

Regular Verbs
Examples :

Irregular Verbs
 There are no rules for irregular verbs that make them
past tense.
There are patterns that make it eaisier for us to learn
them.

1. Verbs that end in i + c + e change the vowel “i” to “o”.

2. Verbs that contain a duplicate “e” remote one and add a
“t” at the end.

3. Verbs that end in, im, ink, change the “i” for the “a”.

4. There are also verbs that change when converted to the
past tense and end in ought.

5. There are some verbs that are writtem the same both in
the present and in the past.
