workplace. The important results are:
➢ MENTAL HEALTH
➢ ECONOMIC COSTS
➢ EMPLOYER- Owners can contribute much through complying with existing laws and implementing
social responsibilities.
➢ TRADE UNIONS- Trade unions can contribute in improving working conditions through playing an
effective mediating role between owners and workers. They should monitor social compliance of
factories and provide feedback to the concerned authorities,
➢ NGOs AND HUMAN RIGHT ACTIVISTS- They can strengthen the compliance process through carrying
out valuable neutral research, providing feedback on actions and working as a coordinator among
different stakeholders.

continuous publicity. The news and programme can influence other stakeholders to follow social
compliance of the business.
Occupational Safety Laws and ACTs
The main purpose of the Act is to protect workers from health and safety hazards on
the job. It sets out duties for all workplace parties and rights for workers. It
establishes procedures for dealing with workplace hazards and provides for
enforcement of the law where compliance has not been achieved voluntarily.
● The basic aim of the concerned law making and amending authorities is to
devise laws which provide safety standards to protect the basic needs of
workers and take care of their welfare. These laws are flexible enough to create
rather than destroy jobs, and increase the overall wellbeing of workers.
OBJECTIVES
● Reducing the incidence of work related injuries, fatalities and diseases.
● Reducing the cost of workplace injuries and diseases.
● Increasing community awareness regarding areas related to OHS.
● Providing a system of incentives to employers and employees so that they
achieve higher health and safety standards.
DIFFERENT LAWS
1. Laws related to working hours, conditions of services and employment
● Earlier health hazards were primarily associated with jobs found in manufacturing
operations.
● In recent years, hazards outside of plants have been recognized and methods to lessen
these hazards have been adopted.
● Most workplace hazards aren’t obvious like slippery floors or unguarded equipments.
● But typically, workplace hazards include chemicals and other hazardous materials
exposure, temperature extremes, biohazards and ergonomic hazards.
Cumulative Trauma Disorders
● Also known as repetitive motion injuries, these are musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs),
i.e., injuries of the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, spinal discs caused by
repeated stresses and strains.
● These disorders serve to lower employee productivity, increase employer health costs,
and incur workers compensation payments.
● Regular improvements in office furniture, video display terminals, tool design, adjustable
workstations, etc are all attempts to make the work setting more comfortable.
Computer Workstation Issues
○ Muscular aches and pains: Pains in the back, neck, and shoulders are the common
complaints.
○ Job stress: Eye strain, postural problems, insufficient training, excessive workloads,
and mostrous works are complaints reported.
Chemical Hazards
● As per the Bureau of labor Statistics, more than 55000 workers suffer illness
related to chemical exposures each year.
● Two of the major reasons being:
○ Smoking and Tobacco Smoke- Virtually all large and even smaller organizations
have initiated smoking policies specifying when and where smoking will be
allowed in their organizations.
○ Bloodborne Pathogens- Exposures to blood and other body fluids occur across a
wide variety of occupations and can result in employees contracting diseases. As
per OSHA guidelines, companies are required to provide employees with
protective equipments, train them to handle blood and body fluids, dispose them
properly.
Substance Abuse
● Both Quality & Quantity of Work decline due to on the job absenteeism.
● Morale of other workers drop as they have to shoulder these type of employees.
● Recognizing it is difficult as managers are not psychiatrist who have specialized training in identifying
and dealing with such scenarios.
