ROLE OF STAKEHOLDERS
➢ GOVERNMENT- Government should take a leading role in executing “Safety and Health” related
policies.

➢ EMPLOYER- Owners can contribute much through complying with existing laws and implementing
social responsibilities.

➢ TRADE UNIONS- Trade unions can contribute in improving working conditions through playing an
effective mediating role between owners and workers. They should monitor social compliance of
factories and provide feedback to the concerned authorities,

➢ NGOs AND HUMAN RIGHT ACTIVISTS- They can strengthen the compliance process through carrying
out valuable neutral research, providing feedback on actions and working as a coordinator among
different stakeholders.

➢ MASS MEDIA- The media can play an effective role in creating awareness on safety issues through
continuous publicity. The news and programme can influence other stakeholders to follow social
compliance of the business.
Occupational Safety Laws and ACTs
The main purpose of the Act is to protect workers from health and safety hazards on
the job. It sets out duties for all workplace parties and rights for workers. It
establishes procedures for dealing with workplace hazards and provides for
enforcement of the law where compliance has not been achieved voluntarily.

● The basic aim of the concerned law making and amending authorities is to
devise laws which provide safety standards to protect the basic needs of
workers and take care of their welfare. These laws are flexible enough to create
rather than destroy jobs, and increase the overall wellbeing of workers.

OBJECTIVES
● Reducing the incidence of work related injuries, fatalities and diseases.
● Reducing the cost of workplace injuries and diseases.
● Increasing community awareness regarding areas related to OHS.
● Providing a system of incentives to employers and employees so that they
achieve higher health and safety standards.
DIFFERENT LAWS
1. Laws related to working hours, conditions of services and employment

2. Laws related to equality and empowerment of women

3. Laws related to equality and empowerment of children

4. Laws related to social security

5. Laws related to labour welfare

6. Laws related to employment & training

7. Other Relevant Legislation

Workplace Hazards / Ergonomics

● Earlier health hazards were primarily associated with jobs found in manufacturing
operations.

● In recent years, hazards outside of plants have been recognized and methods to lessen
these hazards have been adopted.

● Most workplace hazards aren’t obvious like slippery floors or unguarded equipments.

● But typically, workplace hazards include chemicals and other hazardous materials
exposure, temperature extremes, biohazards and ergonomic hazards.
Cumulative Trauma Disorders

● Also known as repetitive motion injuries, these are musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs),
i.e., injuries of the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, spinal discs caused by
repeated stresses and strains.

● These disorders serve to lower employee productivity, increase employer health costs,
and incur workers compensation payments.

● To prevent or improve such workplace conditions, ergonomics techniques can be

applied.

● Regular improvements in office furniture, video display terminals, tool design, adjustable
workstations, etc are all attempts to make the work setting more comfortable.
Computer Workstation Issues

● Managers have to confront various problems in this area:

○ Visual difficulties: VDT operators frequently complain of blurred vision, sore eyes,
burning and itching eyes and glare.

○ Muscular aches and pains: Pains in the back, neck, and shoulders are the common
complaints.

○ Job stress: Eye strain, postural problems, insufficient training, excessive workloads,
and mostrous works are complaints reported.
Chemical Hazards

● As per the Bureau of labor Statistics, more than 55000 workers suffer illness
related to chemical exposures each year.
● Two of the major reasons being:
○ Smoking and Tobacco Smoke- Virtually all large and even smaller organizations
have initiated smoking policies specifying when and where smoking will be
allowed in their organizations.

○ Bloodborne Pathogens- Exposures to blood and other body fluids occur across a
wide variety of occupations and can result in employees contracting diseases. As
per OSHA guidelines, companies are required to provide employees with
protective equipments, train them to handle blood and body fluids, dispose them
properly.
Substance Abuse

● Alcoholism & Substance Abuse is a widespread problem at work

● Both Quality & Quantity of Work decline due to on the job absenteeism.

● Morale of other workers drop as they have to shoulder these type of employees.

● Recognizing it is difficult as managers are not psychiatrist who have specialized training in identifying
and dealing with such scenarios.

Managing the New Workforce
● The employees who are recently recruited are vulnerable to various hazards at the
workplace.
● There should always be strict Safety and Health Policies that HR managers must
make clear to their new employees at the time of their joining or induction.
● Reducing Unsafe Conditions is the first line of defense against safety and health
threats.
● This includes identifying and eliminating potential risks such as unguarded
equipment. Then, reducing potential distractions such as noise, heat, stress, etc.
Finally, screening and training employees.
● The employer should maintain a proper infrastructure dedicated to safety and
health at workplace. This may include proper warnings and sign boards, fire-
fighting equipment, health and hygiene maintenance, etc.
● Some organizations have a dedicated Emergency Response Team to tackle
hazards and accidents at the workplace.
Screening and Training Employees
● Proper screening and training new employees can reduce the risks of unsafe acts.
● The new employees should be informed about the potential threats at the
workplace.
● The employees can be screened for certain traits that cause accidents. This can be
done by Job Simulation Tests, Physical Capabilities Test, Behavioural Interview
Questions, etc.
● New employees should be well trained for safety measures such as fire-fighting
drills, disaster management, first aid, evacuation drills, etc.
● Timely medical checkups should be conducted so as check whether the
employees are conforming to the required health standards.
