Neoclassic
 An artistic style prevalent in europe from the
mid-1700 to the late 1800s
 Also called Academic style from the art
academies, which taught students techniques
after this manner.
 This style usually employed classical or Greco-
Roman ideals of beauty and proportion of human
figure, frequently tackling subjects from history,
mythology, and literature with refined realistic
Social Realism

Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, Filipina DH(1995)

National Artist Victor Edades is credited for
initiating the Art Movement that challenged
the neoclassic style, which was dominant at
the time he came home from studying in
America before the war.
Imelda Cajipe-Endaya was born in 1949 in Manila.
Having won recognition first as a printmaker, she shifted
to painting in 1981 and now works hybrid media and
installations. She uses indigenous materials and folk-
symbolic elements to convey local texture and colors,
creating works that often allude to events and social
conditions such as militarization and feminism.
Imelda Cajipe Endaya shows Filipina: DH (1995)–an
installation with found objects, plaster, paper mache sculpture,
a tape player and slide projector. This piece features textured
domestic artifacts interspersed with momentos of family and
religious devotion, and was inspired by the Singapore
governments controversial and, many felt, unjust hanging
of Flor Contemplacion, a domestic worker from the Philippines, for murder.
Social Realism
 An art movement that started within the
Modern Art period during the 1970’s to the
1980’s.
 It aimed to to expose the current socio-political
issues by depicting the reality of the masses,
tackling such themes as the struggle of the
marginalized, inequality, and the forms of
repression.
Characteristics of Contemporary
Arts
• Integrative
• Process-based
• Site-specific
• Collaborative
Characteristics of Contemporary
Arts
• Integrative- the artist is free to
integrate any medium or to conform
any art form or style in order to express
their artistic intention, without being
limited to conform to a stylistic trend in
order to be called contemporary.
Process-based - it emphasizes on
how the artist starts not with a final
product in mind, but instead begins
with the development of a concept
and then subsequently proceeds
with realizing the idea.
 Site-specific – it allows for an
artwork’s meaning to have a direct
relationship to a specific location
where it is seen or experienced.
Example: Graffiti artwork as seen in

the street vs. graffiti artwork seen in

the museum
 Collaborative – wherein the end
product is created with the
involvement of two or more artist.
 Interactive – it recognizes how the

audience has the potential to

change or add the meaning of an
artwork.
*What is Integrative Art
Integrative Art, from the word
“integrate”, refers to art
approaches or techniques that
involve the use of combination
or mixed mediums.
Modern Applications of Integrative Art
to Contemporary Art
1. Graphic Design = Because of
the advanced computer
software nowadays, this field is
at its peak where, with the aid
of technology, graphic
designers are able to integrate
text, font styles, colors, images,
symbols and space into a
seamless and attractive layout.
2. Animation = Again due
to technology, this field is
also at its peak. Here, the
rendered illustrations and
texts are given 3D or 4D
dimensions and
movement including
sound.
 3. Video & Film Making These
two mediums of integrative
art involve the recording
and broadcasting of content
through the use of moving
images, sounds, music,
camera shots, lighting,
action, dialogues, etc.
4. Theater Production
This mixed art medium
utilizes motion, action,
voice, sounds, music,
dancing, lighting,
costumes, props and stage
sets and backgrounds in
conveying the message of
a story, drama or musical.
