ABSTRACT
Today concrete is most widely used construction material due to its good compressive strength and durability.
The aim of this investigation is to study the strength and durability properties of concrete
using water-soluble polyethylene glycol as self-curing agent.
The function of self-curing agent is to reduce the water evaporation from concrete, and hence they increase the water retention
capacity of concrete compared to the conventionally cured concrete.
The use of self-curing admixtures is very important from the point of view that saving of water is a necessity everyday (for each
cubic meter of concrete requires 3m3 of water in a construction, most of which is used for curing).
In this study, compressive strength , split tensile and flexural strength of concrete containing self-curing agent is investigated and
compared with those of conventionally cured concrete.

INTRODUCTION
Curing is the process of controlling the moisture transport from concrete during Cement hydration.
It may be either after it has been placed in position or during the manufacture of concrete, thereby providing time for the
hydration of the cement to occur.
the hydration of cement does take time in days, and even weeks rather than hours curing must be undertaken for a reasonable
period of time, if the concrete is to achieve its potential strength and durability.
Curing may also encompass the control of temperature since this affects the rate at which cement hydrates.
The curing period may depend on the properties required of the concrete, the purpose for which it is to be used, and the
ambient conditions, i.e. the temperature and relative humidity of the surrounding atmosphere.
Curing is designed primarily to keep the concrete moist, by preventing the loss of moisture from the concrete during the period
in which it is gaining strength.

OBJECTIVES
The objective of the investigation is to use polyethylene glycol (PEG) of average molecular weight 400
as self curing agent.
In this study the use of M30 grade of concrete and to find out optimum strength.
In this study compressive strength of concrete containing self-curing agent is investigated and
comparing with conventional curing concrete.
In this study split tensile strength of concrete containing self-curing agent is investigated and comparing
with conventional curing concrete.
METHODOLOGY
• The collection of material for the self curing concrete such as PEG-400, Cement, aggregate and water
for M30 concrete mixes are collecting and casting.
• The conventional concrete is curing in water.M30 Grade mixes are designating in accordance with
IS: 10262-2009.
• We are manufacturing concrete mortars cubes of size 150X150X150 mm which is same a standard
cubes.
• Cylindrical specimens of size 300 mm × 150 mm are preparing using the steel molds.
• The suitable proportion is using for Self curing concrete(cement:fine aggregate:coarse aggregates)
• Investigation strength of self curing concrete by adding polyethylene glycol 400 @ 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2%
by weight of cement to the concrete.
• Cement concrete is preparing by using suitable water cement ratio according to the IS 383-1970
• We have to filling the concrete in layers and by giving hand compaction the concrete will be settled properly.
• Conventional concrete is casting with M30 mix and made to water curing.
• Another set of cubes are casting using PEG-400 with M30 concrete and allowing for atmosphere curing.
• Similarly cubes are for 7 and 28 days for conventional and PEG 400 to study the strength properties
(compressive strength and split tensile strength).
• After the completion of 28 days curing, the initial weights of the specimens are noted.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
• Cement
• Fine Aggregates
• Coarse Aggregate
• Water
• Polyethylene Glycol-400(PEG-400)
BASIC TESTS ON MATERIALS
Sieve analysis
Specific gravity for coarse aggregate
Specific gravity for fine aggregate
Specific gravity of crushed fourth class brick.
Specific gravity of cement
Slump test
Compressive strength test
Split tensile test
• Flexural strength test
MIX PROPORTION
• Five mixture proportions were made with M30 grade.
• First were conventional concrete mix (normal concrete) and the next proportions mix is with adding 0.5%,
1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% self curing agent (PEG400) of weight of cement.
• Mix proportions are given in table as per Indian standard specification IS: 10262-2007 to obtain 7 and 28
days compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength.
• Mix proportion for M30 grade is done by adding self curing agent (PEG400) by weight of cement
