Simulation

 Imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system.

 Process simulation is used for the design, development, analysis, and
optimization of technical processes.
 Why SIMULATION?
 To design new processes.
 To get possible outcomes when a real system cannot be engaged. ( dangerous /
non-existent / inaccessible)
 Improve plant yields through the optimization of existing plant processes.
 Evaluate process improvements before committing to costly capital projects.
 Troubleshooting in existent process.
Department of Chemical
Science and Engineering
Modeling

 Set of concepts representing a system.

 Abstractions of things in the real physical world.
 Used to help people know, understand, or simulate a subject the model
represents.

Science and Engineering
PRO/II

 Flagship steady-state process simulator produced by Schneider

Electric SimSci brand.
 Widely used for process design and operational analysis in the
chemical, natural, petroleum solids processing, and polymer
industries.
 Includes: MATLAB?
Numerical
 chemical component library
computations
 thermodynamic property prediction methods
 unit operations such as distillation columns, heat exchangers, compressors,
and reactors as found in the chemical processing industries.

Distillation Column

 An essential item used

in distillation of liquid mixtures.
 Separates the mixture into its
component parts, or fractions,
based on the differences in
volatilities.
 Can be used in small scale
laboratory distillations as well as
for large scale industrial
distillations.

Heat Exchanger

 A device that allows heat from a fluid to pass to

a second fluid.
Symbol of Heat exchanger
 Two fluids do not have to mix together or come
in direct contact.
 Typical heat exchangers experienced by us in
our daily lives include condensers and
evaporators used in air conditioning units and
refrigerators.

Objective

Primary Objective:
 To learn to use PRO/ II simulation software for chemical engineering problems

Secondary Objective:
 To learn about PFD (Process Flow Diagram)
 To continuously run the unit with defined optimization strategy
 To calculate approximate value rather than assumptions value
Department of Chemical
Science and Engineering
Scope

 Simulation modeling provides valuable solutions by giving clear

insights into complex systems.
 Simulation can be used in business when conducting experiments on a
real system is impossible or impractical, often because of cost or time.
 A good alternative when process problems become too difficult to
solve analytically or when you want to focus on a problem as a
system.
Department of Chemical
Science and Engineering
Limitation

 Itneeds valid source information about the relevant selection of key

characteristics and behaviors.
 We need simple approximation and assumption within the simulation
 We need conformity and validity of simulation outcomes.
Department of Chemical
Science and Engineering
Methodology

 For simulation of distillation column and

heat exchanger we will use a simulating
software called as “PRO/ II”.
