 May 1888- March 1889- Rizal live in


London to copy, study and made
annotations of Dr. Antonio de Morga’s
Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas (Events
in the Philippine Islands), rare copy
kept in British Museum
 Complete annotating Morga’s book
and wrote articles in La Solidaridad
 Stayed as guest at house of Dr.
Antonio Ma. Regidor, exile of 1872,
law practitioner
 May- moved to No.37 Chalcot
Crescent, Primerose Hill
 Mr. Beckett- organist of St. Paul
Cathedral where he pay 2 pounds
sterling a week
 Dr. Reinhold Rost- librarian at India
office, authority on Malayan customs;

Romance with Adelina

 Adelina- young talented, quiet and


unaffected lady with refined manners,
 Boustead couple- has two daughters
Nelly, the older and Adelina, the
younger
 Rizal and Antonio Luna visit Boustead
family in Paris
 Nelly- infatuated with Rizal but because
he loved Adelina, he did not even show
any sign of affection for Nelly
 Luna had strong feelings for Nelly but
Nelly did have any iota of love for him
 Luna become jealous of Rizal because
Nelly was obviously inlove with Rizal
 Luna challenged Rizal to duel but
fortunately the matter was settled by
their friends

Background of the Two Duels

 Duels between Rizal and Luna happen


in Madrid gathering
 Practice of serving wine to guest is
always part of merriment and fun
 After drinking many glasses of wine,
Luna become intoxicated
 He accused Rizal for his failure to win
the heart of Nelly
 At height of jealousy, he utter
unsavory words to Nelly
 Rizal could not control his temper so
he challenged him in a duel
 When Luna become sober, he realized
the incident should not happen so he
begged an apology to Rizal
 Rizal accept his apology anf they
become friends again
 Wenceslao Retana- talented Spanish
scholar , accomplished writer used to
contribute articles in an anti- Filipino
newspaper in Madrid
 La Epoca- widely circulated
newspaper in Madrid he assert that
Rizal’s relatives and friends did not
paid their annual rents for the land
they tilled so they were ejected by
Dominicans
 Rizal could not take the insult sitting
down so he challenged Retana to a duel
 Retana did not accept the duel
 For Rizal, the rational thing for Retana
is to publish a retraction and an apology
in the same newspaper for the articles
he wrote which he did
 Retana develop great admiration for
Rizal that he wrote first-book length
biography of greatest Filipino heroes
