Occupational health and Counselling

Introduction:
• Today the latest trend in Corporate HR world is “Employee Counselling at
Workplace”. This trend has been imported from the United States to India.

• In this competition world there are de-stressed employees in each and every
organization. It’s difficult to find a tension free employee in an organization.

• Organization’s has started Counselling at Workplace to retain the current


employees, the talented employees, to increase the productivity and this is
one of the way to motivate their employee.
Occupational health

Introduction:

Occupational health is the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of


physical, mental and social well-being of workers by establishing and
maintaining a safe and healthy working environment.
Occupational health services include:

• Identification and assessment of the risks from health hazards in the workplace.

• Providing advice, training and education on occupational health, safety,


ergonomics, and protective equipment.

• Providing first aid and emergency treatment.

• Planning and designing workplaces to ensure the adaptation of the worker to the
work is promoted.

• Monitoring of workers’ health in relation to work.


Counselling:
MEANING
• Counselling denotes ‘giving of advice’.It is a specialized service of guidance. It
is a process designed to help an individual grow to greater maturity through
learning and to makes decisions of an individual.

DEFINITION
• Counselling is a method that helps the client to use a problem solving process
to recognize and manage stress and that facilitates interpersonal relationships
among client, family and health care team
Definition of employee
counselling

• Employee counselling is a therapeutic process of providing help and support


to people to face and sail through difficult times in life. It helps people to see
things from a different viewpoint and encourage them to draft their action
plan.
Aims of counselling

• Understanding self

• Making impersonal decisions

• Setting achievable goals which enhance growth

• Planning in the present to bring about desired future

• Effective solutions to personal and interpersonal problems.


• Coping with difficult situations

• Controlling self defeating emotions

• Acquiring effective transaction skills.

• Acquiring positive self-regard and a sense of optimism about ones own ability to

satisfy ones basic needs.

• Plan your counselling strategy.

• Support subordinates to implement their plan of action

• Review plan of action to determine if the desired results were achieved

• Amend the plan of action if required

• Measures after session include follow up counselling and informing the high-
up.
QUALITIES OF EFFECTIVE COUNSELLING

• The counsellor should be either a professional counsellor or any senior, experienced,


mature employee.counselor qualities

• The counsellor should be a good patient listener.

• Counsellor should be able to understand the problem of employee and should be


able to give a proper advice.

• Counsellor should be able boost the employee for his/her career path and show a
positive way.

• Counsellor should be able to sort out the official problems of the employee.
• Counsellor should not compare the employee with other employees.

• Counsellor should be able to understand the situation of the employee.

• Counsellor should have warm manners and social etiquettes.

• Excellent communication skills

• Counsellor should have sufficient time to understand and listen about the
employee problems. It does not means that counselling should go on for
hours
Benefits of effective counselling

Helps employees to tackle with the problems effectively

Employees are able to sort their problems

Helps in decision making

A new way to look at the perspective.

May reduce the number of absenteeism of employee

It may prevent termination from employer or resignation from employee.

It reduces the cost of hiring new employee and training new staff.

Possibility of smooth coordination between employer and employee.


SUMMARY

• Today we have discussed about occupational health, meaning and


definition of counselling and employee counselling, aims of
counselling, modes of counselling and benefits of counselling.
• CONCLUSION
• Counselling is a method that helps the client to use a problem
solving process to recognize and manage stress and that facilitates
interpersonal relationships among client, family and health care
team.
• The aim of counselling are understanding self, making impersonal
decisions, setting achievable goals which enhance growth etc and
the modes of counselling is disciplinary and developmental.

• The benefits of employee counselling are helps employees to


tackle with the problems effectively, employees are able to sort
their problems, helps in decision making
