LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this lecture, you should be

able to:
• understand the discipline and
methodology of the systems approach
represented by the following functions

Systems Analysis

It includes investigation of system

objectives, selecting performance
criteria, conceiving alternative
solutions, evaluating the feasibility of
proposed solutions, selecting the
preferred solution, writing functional
specifications together with block
diagrams for the preferred solutions.

Systems Design
Preliminary design:
The functional specifications are evaluated and
a design approach is selected.

Detailed design:
Software and hardware specifications are
developed to satisfy the above requirements.
Drawings are made from which parts are
manufactured and detailed test programmes are
produced.
In the above two processes, implementation of
the system must be considered actively.
Construction of plant, access to site, personnel
needed and maintenance required must not be
left.

Systems Operation Planning

This includes pre-installation activities required

to support the system. The activities include

• training of operators and maintenance staff

• Writing manuals
• Plans for installation, maintenance, logistics and
failure reporting.

Systems Management

It is not a phase of systems engineering.

It is the controlling function which instigates

the preliminary work and monitors it and
controls and monitors the later stages,
provides resources and deals with
bottlenecks as they occur.

Management has the major function of

producing project documentation.

Example of the Systems Engineering
Process

URBAN TRANSIT SYSTEM:

Consideration of the alternatives of building additional
roads (single or dual-carriageway), installing a rail
transit system, improving the traffic control system
expanding the bus system, staggering of work shifts
and similar possibilities. Only some of the possibilities
may be feasible due to constraints like funds, date of
completion, state of technological development,
social factors etc.
The system selected for example is RAIL TRANSIT.

Example of the Systems Engineering
Process

Systems analysis:
If for example, rail transit had been selected as the best
solution, the functional specification would include
passenger carrying capacity, train routes, number and
location of platforms, passenger loading at each
platform, time table etc.,

Systems design(1):
On the receipt of the above functional
specifications several design approaches
would be conceived and evaluated during
the preliminary design phase. E.g. trade-
off studies on mono-rail versus dual rail,
electric versus propulsion, manual control
versus automatic control.

Example of the Systems Engineering
Process

Systems design(2):
Detailed hardware and software specifications are
required to specify the requirements of the design
approach selected above.
For example detailed design of railway cars, station time,
door open time, speed between stations, speed between
stations etc.,
Drawings and specifications are the output of the phase
and are transmitted to manufacturing contractors for
equipment construction.
Work started in the preliminary design and continuing up
to this point are at which the system is operational.
Track maintenance programme, training of train operators,
number of location of service yard, spare-part supplies etc.

Systems Management

Systems management:
This is an active phase from the inception of the
project to the point where the system is delivered
to the client.
- rerouting traffic
- processing materials and equipment
- identify key milestones and the schedule
- critical path, approving specifications and
selecting contractors.

Duration : 15 minutes
What to do?
Discuss the Systems Engineering process in
groups of five using another example apart
from the rail transit system example discussed
in the slides.
