Subtitle
• Rhythm is the first element that
attracts the attention of the child.
Simple rhythm is evidence- the
movement of the eyes, feet and toes,
hand and the fingers, and the hand
as people listen. Rhythm is present in
the rising and setting of the sun, in
breathing, speaking, beating of the
heart, and in walking.
• There is rhythm in nature: in the
swaying of the trees, in the pitter patter
of drops of rain and in movement of the
waves. Feeling rhythm is the most
important single item in learning music,
in performing music, and even in
listening to music.
Parts of Rhythm
• 1. Beat-is the unit of time that is felt
and sensed. In a piece of music, there
is always a note that coincides with
the beat exactly. It is called the beat
note. The first beat in a measure is
usually played with more emphasis
than the other beats. It is called down
beat.
• 2. Accent- Beats have a natural
tendency to form groups. The first
beat in the group is stressed. This
stress is called accent. The accents
divides beats into sections. Rhythm
and accent are closely linked and each
cannot be considered apart from each
other.
• Accents may differ in relative
strength. They can be strong and
weak. Speech sounds attract
attention roughly in proportion to
the amount of accent they carry.
Strong accents attracts more
attention.
• 3. Meter- is taken from the Greek
word “metron” which means measure.
Meter is natural grouping of the beats.
It is indicated by bar lines which
divide the measure into successive
units of two (duple), three (triple),
four (quadruple) and so forth.

b. Nagagamit ang barline sa
pagpapangkat ng beat/kumpas sa
isang meter
These numbers called “Time
Signature” are very important
because they tell two very
important things. The top number
indicates how many beats are there
in one measure, while the bottom
number tells what kind of note is
going to get one beat or count.
4-means that there are four
beats in one measure
4- means that quarter note will
be held for one beat.

• Rhythmic Pattern- is the division of beats into pattern
of sound. The music becomes clear when the
component of rhythm (beat, meter, accent and
rhythmic pattern) are built into phrases. The rhythmic
pattern is indicated by the words and syllables of the
song. A rhythmic pattern is a combination of notes
found in one measure of a given time signature.
