Present and past tenses

State verbs
Uses of Would- Used to
STATE VERBS

Express a permanent state rather than an action and DO NOT have continuous
forms.
• Verbs of senses: feel, hear, smell, taste,see.
• Verbs of feelings and emotions: adore, detest, dislike, like, hate, enjoy, etc.
• Verbs of opinion: agree, believe, suppose, understand, etc.
• Other verbs: Appear, belong, concern, contain, depend, fit, have, know,
possess, own, need, prefer, require, want, weigh, wish.
EXAMPLES

I see someone standing at the front door.

She really enjoys cooking for her Friends.

I don’t believe in ghosts.

This skirt fits you well. (it’s the right size and shape for you)

My uncle owns a cottage.

NOTE: Feel and hurt – use in continuous and simple forms

Ann is feeling/feels tired. My legs hurt/ are hurting.


State verbs in continuous forms

Present perfect

Past tense: used to – would- was going to

 USED TO: expresses past habitual actions and permanent states ( stative verbs are
are not used with would)
I used to wake up at 6 am. (also would wake up)
I used to live in a flat. (NOT would wake up)

 WOULD: expresses past repeated actions and routines- not states.


When I was young I would visit my grandma at weekends. (also: I used to visit)
BE/GET USED TO + VERB-ING: expresses habitual actions and means “be/get
accustomed to” , “be in the habit of”

She isn’t used to staying up late at night.


We’re getting used to working at home.

WAS/WERE GOING TO : expresses actions one intended to do but didn’t.

I was going to buy a car, but unfortunately I couldn’t afford one.


Rewrite the following sentences using: USED TO, WOULD, BE/GET USED
TO + -ING.
1. Paul lived in Brazil when he was young. Paul used to live in Brazil when he was young.

2. When he was in the army, he used to wake up at 5 o’clock in the morning.


When he was in the army, he ________ wake up at 5 o’clock in the morning.
3 . Rosa didn’t like English food, but now she quite likes it.

Time words
Underline the correct time word.
