Confusing Verbs
Borrow/Lend
To borrow- tomar emprestado : You borrow money from a bank, a book from a library…
To lend - emprestar para - A friend will lend you some money, a book
Bring/take
To bring – trazer: You can ask some one to bring you the newspaper, some coffee
To take – levar: After you have tread the newspaper or drunk the coffee you can ask someone to
take it away.
Win/Beat/Earn –
To win – ganhar (uma competição): You run a fight, a match, a money in a lottery...
To beat – ganhar (de um adversário) : You beat your opponet, your enemy...
To earn – ganhar (dinheiro) :You earn money in return for labor or other services...
Lose/Miss
To lose – perder (objetos): You can lose your pen, your umbrella, your address, your book.
To miss – perder (em virtude de atraso): You can miss the train, the bus, the first lesson, the beginning
of the show… (you can miss a person-> ~I MISS YOU~ <3 )
Meet/ Know
To meet – conhecer alguém pela primeira vez: You meet people when you see them for the first time.
To know – conhecer alguém (por algum tempo): You know people after you meet them for the first
time, after a while etc...
Remember/Remind
To remember – lembrar-se: You remember dates, people’s names…
To remind – fazer lembrar: People and things remind you of past events, of your obligations, to do
things, you remind people to do things etc…
Teach/Learn
To teach –Ensinar: I am teaching you English.
Avoid/Prevent
To avoid – evitar: When you avoid doing something, you try not to do it.
To prevent – impeder? When you are prevented from doing something, someone or
something does not let you do it.
Use/ Wear
To use- usar (objeto): You use a tipewirter, a screwdriver, a pen...
To wear – usar (no corpo): You wear clothes, shoes, perfume, make-up, jewels, a hat...
Discover/Invent
To discover – descobrir: You discover the cure for the disease, a new element, a new place…
To invent – inventor: You invent a machine, a game, a process, a system…
Drop/Fall
To drop – derrubar: You drop your pen on the floor.
To fall – cair: When you drop something, you let it fall either by accident of on purpose.
Spend/ Waste
To spend – gastar (dinheiro, tempo): If you spend money, you pay for the things you want.
To waste – desperdiçar: If you waste you money or time, you use too much of it or with things
thar were not worth the money.
Discuss/Argue
To discuss – trocar ideias: You discuss a problem, an important matter.
To argue – Trocar acusações, discutir (talvez ofensivamente): You argue with your parents,
your wife/husband, your brother/sister…
Intend/Pretend
To intend – pretender: If you intend to do something , you want to do it.
To pretend – fingir: If you pretend to be doing something, you are trying to make people
believe that you are doing it.
Realize/ Accomplish
To realize- perceber, compreender: When you realize something, you become aware of it.
To accomplish – realizar: When you accomplish something, you manage to do it or to finish it.

Do and make
You do a service, justice to someone, the ironing, your hair, the shopping, your
homework, an exercise, the lesson, business, your duty, the housework, someone a
favor, your best, a good job, the cooking, gymnastics, the typing, the dishes, an
assignment...
You make trouble, a good or bad impession, peace, arrangements, people cry or
laugh, people happy of unhappy, a journey, a mistake, money, plans, fun of people,
a living, a discovery, a choice, friends, love, an offer, a cake, cooffe or tea, the
beds, a speach
To raise (=to put – something- up) – levantar, erguer alguma coisa (transitive verb)
You raise your hand, hopes, the window, your eyebrows...
Say, Tell
Say is a transitive verb!
You say a prayer, something to someone, that..., to people…, a few words to someone.
Obs: THE VERB “TO LIE” CAN MEAN “NOT TELLING THE TRUTH”
