FRONTAL BONE

EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL SURFACE

FRONTAL BONE: INTRODUCTION
 An unpaired bone that is a part of
the boney structure that forms
the anterior and superior portions
of the skull
  At the beginning of life, it is a
bone separated by a temporary
suture called the frontal suture.
FRONTAL BONE: INTRODUCTION
 It plays a vital role in protecting
important neural structures and
forms the superior aspect of the
orbit.
 Frontal bone fractures occur in
roughly 5% to 15% of all facial
fractures
FRONTAL BONE: EXTERNAL
SURFACES
The greater part of the external
surface corresponds to the
forehead.
This part is bounded on each side by
a prominent ridge that is continuous
anteriorly with the upper border of
the zygomatic process, and
posteriorly with the temporal lines.
FRONTAL BONE: INTERNAL SURFACES
Superior sagittal sinus
 The internal surface is marked,
by a median sulcus for the
superior sagittal sinus.
 Traced downwards the lips of
this sulcus fuse to form a median
ridge called the frontal crest.
 At the lower end of the crest
there is the foramen caecum.
FRONTAL BONE: PARTS
Squamous Part
Orbital Part
Nasal Part
Zygomatic Process
FRONTAL BONE: PARTS

•SQUAMOUS PART:
area of the forehead
FRONTAL BONE: PARTS

• ORBITAL PART:
roof of the orbit and
the ethmoidal sinuses.
FRONTAL BONE: PARTS

• NASAL PART:
Stem of nose
FRONTAL BONE: PARTS

•ZYGOMATIC
PROCESS:
Projection lateral to
the orbital margin
FRONTAL BONE: BORDER

 The bone is surrounded by no less than seven

articulating bones. The adjacent bones and the
corresponding sutures are:
 the lacrimal bone →frontolacrimal suture
 the nasal bone →frontonasal suture
 the ethmoid bone →frontoethmoidal suture
 the maxilla → frontomaxillary suture
 the zygomatic bone → zygomaticofrontal suture
 the sphenoid bone →sphenofrontal suture
 the parietal bones → coronal suture
MARKINGS OF THE FRONTAL
BONE

1. SUPERCILIARY ARCH OR
SUPRAORBITAL RIDGE

-arcus superciliaris frontalis

- is a smooth, arched, elevation
above the orbit, forming the
eyebrow ridge.

BONE

2. GLABELLA

-glabella frontalis
- is a smooth prominence
located above the nasal bones (or
nose) and between the superciliary
arches (or eyebrow arches).

3. SUPRAORBITAL NOTCH/
FORAMEN
-incisura supraobitalis frontalis;
foramen supra-orbitae frontalis
- is a notch or small hole located
along the superior margin of the
orbit. It serves as a passageway for
the supraorbital vessels and nerve.

4. ORBITAL SURFACE OR PLATE

-facies orbitalis frontalis

-is a horizontal extension that
forms the roof of the orbit and nasal
cavity.

cavity.

5. FRONTAL SINUS
-sinus frontalis
-is a large cavity located above
the orbit and deep to the
superciliary arch.
-secretes mucous into the nasal
cavity, lightens the skull, and
resonates the voice.
