Ceramic Product(Export)

Introduction:
 Ceramics denote the manufacture of any product
made from a non-metallic mineral hardened at
high temperatures. Major ceramic products
include glass, earthenware, porcelain, and white-
ware, porcelain enamels, brick tiles, refractories,
cement, lime and gypsum and certain abrasives.

Export Statistics:
 Bangladesh exports ceramic products to about 50
countries including USA, UK, Italy, Germany,
France, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Turkey, Poland,
Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Brazil
and Chile according to BCWMA data. At least 75
percent of the total exports of the products go to
Europe, about 15 per cent to the US market and
remaining 10 per cent to other markets.

Export Statistics:
 According to recent press reports, local ceramic ware
manufacturing industry is expecting a steady growth
with a US$100 million return from exports by 2015
as the global market favors more shipments from
Bangladesh. As many as 21 leading ceramic
manufacturing plants earned more than US$ 35
million from exports of their products to 50 countries
in the last fiscal year. Of the products, ceramic table
wares are being exported to about 50 countries
including the United States and Canada, tiles to
India, Nepal and Bhutan and sanitary wares to the
Middle East, especially to the United Arab Emirates.

Raw Cotton(Import)
Import Statistics:
 Cotton is one of the important cash crops in
Bangladesh. It is the main raw materials of textile
industry. Annual requirement of raw cotton for textile
industry of Bangladesh is estimated around 2.5 million
bales. Local production is only about 0.1 million bales.
Around 4-5% of the national requirement is fulfilled
through the local production; remaining 95-96% is
fulfilled by importing raw cotton from USA (40%), CIS
(35%), Australia, Pakistan, South Africa and other
cotton producing countries (25%).

Import Statistics:
 In 2011, Bangladesh surpassed Indonesia as the world’s third largest
cotton importer by volume. Between 2006 and 2011, import
volumes increased from 123,920 MTs to 555,977 MTs. Since 2006,
Bangladeshi cotton imports averaged growth of 51 percent per year
and its share of world imports jumped from 2 to 8 percent. India is
Bangladesh’s largest supplier, contributing 65 percent of all
imported cotton in 2011 (up from 33 percent in 2006). The US is the
second largest supplier, its share in the market falling from 24
percent in 2006 to 16 percent in 2011. Other major trade partners
include Australia (6 percent of imports in 2011) and Pakistan (4
percent of imports in 2011).
