DIFFERENT TYPES OF

RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
THE BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATION

Participation in recreation and sports activities can have many benefits for both the individual and community. These
include:
 health promotion and disease prevention – recreation and sports activities are an enjoyable and effective way to
improve health and well-being; they can relieve stress, increase fitness, improve physical and mental health, and prevent
the development of chronic diseases, such as heart disease;
 skills development – physical and social skills are some of the many skills that can be developed through participation in
recreation and sports activities;
 awareness raising, reduction of stigma and social inclusion – recreation and sports activities are a powerful, low-cost
means to foster greater inclusion of people with disabilities; they bring people of all ages and abilities together for
enjoyment, and provide people with disabilities the opportunity to demonstrate their strengths and abilities, and promote a
positive image of disability;
 international peace and development – sport is a universal language that can be used as a powerful tool to promote
peace, tolerance and understanding by bringing people together across boundaries, cultures and religions.
 empowerment – recreation and sports activities can empower people with disabilities by positively influencing their self-
confidence and self-esteem.
OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL
ACTIVITIES
ARCHERY

Archery is the practice of using a

bow to shoot an arrow at a target.
Before the firearm was invented, the
bow and arrow was a powerful
hunting weapon and used in battles
to kill members of the opposing
army.
BATTLE REENACTMENT

 The MSS re-enacts at various sites and

castles, mainly around the South-East of
England including Hedingham Castle,
Herstmonceaux and Edgecote. It has
members from all over the country, of all
ages, from babies to OAPs; with many
families having three generations involved
BMX BIKING

 Race BMX bikes are where BMX

bikes originally came from. These are
used for racing. Street BMX
bikes have pegs on the hubs of the
wheels. These have a number of uses.
One is to give your mates a lift.
HORSEBACK RIDING

 Horseback riding is the activity

of riding a horse, especially for enjoyment
or as a form of exercise
KITE SURFING

 , also known as kite boarding, is an

adrenalin rush across the waves of
the sea being towed by a traction
kite. It can be gentle, or fast and
furious, with leaps and jumps.
Here’s how to get started.
SKATEBOARDING

 Skateboards are seriously cool and a

great way to show off your skills and
style. A skateboard is also a great method
of transport. Skateboards have been
around since the 60’s when surfers
wanted to try surfing on land. In the 70’s,
skate parks began appearing where you
could go to discover what you could do
with a skateboard.
CANOEING & KAYAKING

 Canoeing and Kayaking is all about paddling

about on water in a long narrow boat. More
fun added if used on whitewater or in the sea.
SCUBA DIVING

 Scuba Diving is where you use a self

contained underwater breathing apparatus
(air tank) to enable you to breathe for a long
time when diving underwater. This lets you
spend much more time underwater exploring
reefs, seeing sights such as tropical fish,
wrecks, turtles and so much more.
SNORKELING

 Snorkeling is a way to explore underwater by

swimming near the surface and using a mask and
a snorkel. The mask enables you to see clearly
what’s under the water, and the snorkel allows
you to continue breathing while your face is
underwater.
 Snorkeling is usually only done in relatively
shallow water. This means it does not require
expensive equipment or extensive training. It is
also safer and easier than scuba diving or
freediving.
PARACHUTING

 Parachuting is a method of
transiting from a high point to
Earth with the aid of gravity,
involving the control of speed
during the descent using a
parachute or parachutes.
PARAGLIDING

 Paragliding is the recreational and

competitive adventure sport of
flying paragliders: lightweight, free-flying,
foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid
primary structure. The pilot sits in a harness
suspended below a fabric wing.
BUNGEE JUMPING

 Bungee jumping also spelt bungy jumping,

is an activity that involves a person jumping
from a great height while connected to a large
elastic cord.
 The launching pad is usually erected on a tall
structure such as a building or crane, a bridge
across a deep ravine, or on a natural
geographic feature such as a cliff.
SURFING

 Surfing is a surface water pastime in which

the wave rider, referred to as a surfer, rides
on the forward part, or face, of a moving
wave, which usually carries the surfer
towards the shore
PARKOUR

 Parkour is a training discipline using

movement that developed from military
obstacle course training. Practitioners,
called tracers or traceurs, aim to get from
one point to another in a complex
environment, without assistive equipment
and in the fastest and most efficient way
possible.
ROCK CLIMBING

 Rock climbing is an activity where

participants climb up, down or across
natural rocks or artificial rock walls. The goal
is to reach the summit or the endpoint of a
route without falling.
SKIING

 Skiing is a means of transport using skis to

glide on snow. Variations of purpose include
basic transport, a recreational activity, or a
competitive winter sport.
CANYONING

  is an activity which involves climbing, descending,

jumping and trekking through canyons. The sport
originates from caving and involves both caving
and climbing techniques.
 When people mention canyoninG they are typically
referring to descents that involve rope work, down-
climbing, or jumps that are technical in nature.
 Canyoning frequently done in remote and rugged
settings and often requires navigational, route-finding
and other wilderness skills.
MOUNTAINEERING

 Mountaineering is the set of activities that involves

ascending mountains. Mountaineering-related activities
include traditional outdoor climbing, skiing, and
traversing via ferrates.
 Indoor climbing,  climbing and bouldering are also
considered mountaineering by some.
 Unlike most sports, mountaineering lacks widely-applied
formal rules, regulations, and governance; mountaineers
adhere to a large variety of techniques and philosophies
when climbing mountains.
SKYRUNNING

 Skyrunning is a sport of mountain

running above 2,000 metres (6,600 ft)
where the incline exceeds 30% and the
climbing difficulty does not exceed II
grade.
SWIMMING

 Swimming is the self-propulsion of a person

through water, usually for recreation, sport, exercise,
or survival. Locomotion is achieved through
coordinated movement of the limbs, the body, or
both. Humans can hold their breath underwater and
undertake rudimentary locomotive swimming within
weeks of birth, as a survival response.
SANDBOARDING

 Sandboarding has adherents throughout the

world, but is most prevalent in desert areas
or coastal areas with beach dunes. It is less
popular than snowboarding, partly because it
is very difficult to build a mechanised ski
lift on a sand dune, meaning participants
must walk or ride a dune buggy or all-terrain
vehicle back to the top of the dune. On the
other hand, dunes are normally available
year-round as opposed to ski resorts, which
are seasonal.
ZIPLINE

 Zip line consists of a pulley suspended on a cable

usually made of stainless steel, mounted on
a slope. It is designed to enable cargo or a person
propelled by gravity to travel from the top to the
bottom of the inclined cable by holding on to or
being attached to the freely moving pulley. It has
been described as essentially a Tyrolean
traverse that engages gravity to assist its speed of
movement
