INTRODUCTION
A Road is a path connecting two places that has been paved or otherwise improved to allow travel by foot or some form of
conveyance, including a motor vehicle, cart, bicycle, or horse.
The aim of road construction is establishing a new community, connecting between places, Extend and development
current axes to prevent wasting time and money.
There are many different types of materials are available which are used in road construction, some of the basic materials
are listed below:
•Soil
•Aggregates
•Cement & Cement Concrete
These materials are commonly used in construction of roads. Which are selected based on their characteristics, functions,
properties, and availability.
EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAME

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

To insure materials are fit for purpose.

To find out why products are failing in use or during manufacturing.
To benchmark against competitors materials.
Be familiar with the wide range of materials used for road construction.
To carry out a complete review on appropriate materials for road construction.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY ADOPTED
Basic Road Construction Materials:

There are many different types of materials are available which are used in road construction, some of the basic materials
are listed below:
•Soil
•Stone Aggregates
•Portland Cement & Cement Concrete

Soil
Soil is deposit of earth material, derived naturally from the disintegration of rocks that can be excavated readily with power
equipment in the field or disintegrated by gentle mechanical means in the laboratory. The supporting undisturbed soil layer
the pavement is called natural sub grade. Compacted sub grade is the soil compacted by controlled movement of heavy
compactors.
Stone Aggregates

Aggregate is a collective term for the mineral materials such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone that are used
with a binding medium (such as water, bitumen, Portland cement, lime, etc.) to form compound materials
(such as bituminous concrete and Portland cement concrete). Aggregate is also used for base and sub-base
courses for both flexible and rigid pavements. Aggregates can either be natural or manufactured. Natural
aggregates are generally extracted from larger rock formations through an open excavation (quarry). Extracted
rock is typically reduced to usable sizes by mechanical crushing. Manufactured aggregate is often a bye
product of other manufacturing industries.
Portland Cement & Cement Concrete

Sources for these basic materials can be grouped into three main areas: Mining of Mineral aggregate
deposits, including sand, gravel, and stone. Use of waste slag from the manufacture of iron and steel and
recycling of concrete, which is itself chiefly manufactured from mineral aggregates.

Cement & Cement Concrete:

EXPECTED OUTCOME
After performing all those test on materials we will able to know whether the material is fit for the
construction of road.
To know which material is economical and provide more strength to the road.
To know various properties of materials used.
After all this tests we got an idea about selection of good material suitable for road.
