Politics is a process by which groups of people
make decisions. The term is generally applied to
behavior within civil governments, but politics has
been observed in all human group interactions,
including corporate, academic, and religious
institutions.
Politics of the United States takes place in
the framework of a presidential, federal
republic where the President of the United
States (the head of state and head of
government), United States Congress, and
judiciary share federal powers, and the
federal government shares sovereignty with
the state governments. Federal and state
elections generally take place within the
lines of a two-party system, although this is
not enshrined in law.
The federal entity created by the
Constitution is the dominant feature
of the American governmental system.

The federal government was created

by the states.

Units of local government were created

by the colonies to efficiently carry out
various state functions.
Legislative power is vested in the two chambers of
Congress, the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Judicial power is exercised by the judicial branch (or
judiciary), composed of the Supreme Court and lower
federal courts. The judiciary's function is to interpret
the United States Constitution as well as federal laws
and regulations. This includes resolving disputes
between the executive and legislative branches. The
federal government of the United States was
established by the Constitution. American politics has
been dominated by two parties, the Democratic Party
and the Republican Party, since the American Civil War,
although other parties have also existed.
Most schools in the United
States teach the Declaration
of Independence,
Constitution, Bill of Rights,
and the writings of the
Founding Fathers as the
definition of the country's
governing ideology.
Among the core tenets of this
ideology are the following:
The government is answerable to citizens,
who may change it through elections.

The laws should attach no special privilege to

any citizen (that is, citizens should be equal
before the law).

Separation of church and state. The

government can neither support nor suppress
religion.

Let everyone say whatever they want, insulting

or otherwise, and the people will decide what
is true, what is popular and what is shunned.
Thomas Jefferson founded the Democratic Party in 1792 as a congressional caucus to
fight for the Bill of Rights and against the elitist Federalist Party. In 1798, the "party of
the common man" was officially named the Democratic-Republican Party and in 1800
elected Jefferson as the first Democratic President of the United States.

Founded by anti-slavery expansion activists in 1854, it is often called the Grand Old
Party or the GOP, despite being the younger of the two major parties.
Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president (1861–1865).
Prominent ideologies

Liberalism

Individuals embrace each ideology to widely varying extents.

Liberals and progressives commonly advocate strong civil
liberties, social progressivism, cultural pluralism,
government ensuring of positive rights (education, health
care, etc...) and a mixed economy.

Conservatives
Americans commonly defend the status quo, advocating
more traditional stands on social issues, protection of gun
rights and less government intervention.[ Moderates, who
may be left or right leaning, incorporate different aspects
from liberalism and conservatism into their personal
perspective.
