What do you know about volcanos?
Classifying
Volcanos
• Active Volcanos
• Known to have erupted in recent
times, or is likely to erupt again
• For example: Mount Etna in Italy
• Dormant Volcanos
• Has erupted in the last 2000 years but
not recently
• For example: Mauna Kea in Hawaii
• Extinct Volcanos
• Not expected to erupt again
• For example: Mount Kenya in Kenya

Types of Volcanos

Composite Volcanos: Shield Volcanos: Cinder Cone Volcanos:

• Often explosive • May be very large • Most common type
• Steep sides & cone shape • Not steep • Steep sides & cone shape
• Symmetrical • Non-explosive • Smaller than composite
• Examples: • Lava flows easily • Explodes and has a crater
• Mt. Fuji – Japan • Example: • Examples:
(picture) • Mauna Loa – Hawaii • Paricutín - Mexico
• Mt. Saint Helens - WA (largest in the world)
