Stainless

Steel
Corrosion Free Nature

• Stainless steel is used for long lasting applications, due to its

corrosion-resistant nature & durability.

• Stainless steel will not rust due to the thin layer of chromium
creating an invisible protective layer.

• This thin layer will rebuild itself when oxygen is present.

Types
Stainless steel can be divided into three types

• Austenitic Stainless Steel

• Martensitic Stainless Steel

• Ferritic Stainless Steel

Austenitic Stainless Steel
Austenitic stainless has the highest degree of corrosion resistance of the three types

Martensitic Stainless Steel
Martensitic stainless steel is considered a magnetic in nature. It can be heat treated to increment its hardness
and is not recommended for welding

Ferritic Stainless Steel
This material cannot have heat treatment. Due to the forming process it is magnetic in nature and not
suitable for welding purposes.

Grades
Following are some bolt grades of stainless steel.

• 18-8 Stainless Steel

• 305 Stainless Steel

• 316 Stainless Steel

• 410 Stainless Steel

Usage
Screw Type Chrome

It is used in marine applications in freshwater environments but will not work

18-8 Stainless Steel
as effectively in a salt-water environment as 316 stainless

It is most commonly used to make deck screws, which are used to fasten wood
305 Stainless Steel
or composite boards to the main beams of a deck.

It is used and recommended for applications in harsh or marine environments.

316 Stainless Steel

It is commonly used to make roofing screws, siding screws and self-tapping
410 Stainless Steel
screws, because it is a harder material than the metal being fastened in such
types of applications.
