Definition
Writing is a form of communication that allows stu
dents to put their feelings and ideas on paper, to o
rganize their knowledge and beliefs into convincing
arguments, and to convey meaning through well-c
onstructed text. In its most advanced form, written
expression can be as vivid as a work of art.
Writing activities
1- transitions, writing helps students connect the language an
d make translation between words, students learn to write sm
oother sentences by combining sentences using words like an
d, but, although, if when

2- punctuation, to write well, one must be able to use punctua


tion correctly, the basic rules of punctuation may and may not
be the same in the students native language and English langu
age

3- spelling, writing is one of the routes to improving spelling,


dictation is useful for drawing attention to English spelling and
pronunciation

4- organization, it is the key to developing a writing topic, the


more powerful and creative the writer, the more advanced his
or her organization skills generally are

5- form, through writing students practice various forms and s


tyles for writing letters to stories, students need to know these

Five major categories of classroom writing performance:
1- Imitative or writing down: at the beginning level of learning to w
rite, students will simply, write down English letters, words, and poss
ibly sentences to learn the conversation of the orthographic code

The staps of dictation are:


Teacher reads a short paragraph once or twice at normal speed

Teacher reads the paragraph in short phase units of three or four wo


rds

During the pause, students write exactly what they hear

Teacher then reads the whole paragraph once more at normal spee
d so students can check their writing

Scoring of students written work can utilize a number of rubrics for
