How To Adapt Outdated

Course Books?

❖ According to Malay (2011), coursebooks must appeal to a large
number of students. Therefore, teachers must adapt it
according to the students needs and the specific learning
context.
❖ McGrath (2013) stated the same idea because coursebooks
are ‘written for everyone they are written for no one’.
❖ Omit, Add, Change.
Suggested list by Malay (2011) on how teacher can adapt a
coursebooks :

❖ Omission
❖ Addition
❖ Reduction
❖ Extension
❖ Rewriting/modification
❖ Replacement
❖ Reordering
❖ Branching
How do teachers adapt from an
outdated coursebooks?
Adapting from outdated coursebooks can be from many
aspects such as :

❖ Language
❖ Process
❖ Content
❖ Level
Look for web based tools that can help the students in
developing their vocabularies.

Why? :

❖ Students grow up with the technology


❖ Can help the students to apply the vocabularies if they are
intended to use it for their future.
Supplement themes from the coursebook by searching
for appropriate text online

Why? :

❖ Some topics may not be updated


❖ May not be suitable for the present time
Develop digital reading skills -

Getting the students to find information from a combination


of online texts and videos

Why? :

❖ Students are more familiar with using technologies for


education.
❖ Students would not feel bored during the
lesson.
Help students to understand how to search for materials
which can help them to supplement theme from their
coursebook

Why? :

❖ Students are more familiar with using technologies for


education.
❖ Teacher gets to evaluate the students
Understanding of the topics.
Create interactive digital activities to help students
revise texts, vocabulary or grammar points

Why? :

❖ Ensure the students participate in the lesson


❖ Better understanding with the help of
technologies
Help students to develop digital study skills by getting them
to use computers or other digital devices to make notes

Why? :

❖ Benefiting the students knowledge of technologies to help


them in their study
❖ Making it enjoyable for the students
❖ Help them to revise better
