Reasons Why He Want To Return To The
Philippines
Rizal visited the Jesuit Fathers to ask for the copy he sent them, but they would
not part with it. The Jesuits, especially his former professors- Fr. Francisco
Sanchez, Fr. Jose Bech, and Fr. Federico Faura- were glad to see him.
On August 8th, two days after his arrival in Manila, he reached Calamba
Unlike many successful medical practitioners, Rizal did not selfishly devote all
his time enriching himself. He opened a gymnasium for young folks, where he
introduced European sports. He tried to interest his town mates in gymnastics,
fencing and shooting so as to discourage the cockfights and gambling.

On August 6th he arrived in manila. He disembarked shortly after
nine o'clock that night. He stayed in the city for a short time to visit
his friends. He found Manila the same as when he left it five years
ago.

The Governor-General assigned a young spanish lieutenant, Don Jose
Taviel de Andrade, as a body Guard of Rizal.
*Father Font printed his report and circulated its copies, believing that his
critique of the disputed novel would discredit it.
*Fr. Jose Rodriguez, prior of Guadalupe, Published in 1888 a pamphlet
entitled Caiingat Cayo ( beware )which attacked the Noli and warned the
readers that if they read it " they commit mortal sins inasmuch as the said
book is full of heresy.
*Spanish writer, Vicente Barrantes. His bitter criticism of the novel was
published in madrid newspaper, La Espana Moderna/ Jan. 1890.
Archbishop of manila, Msgr. Pedro Payo ( a Dominican) sent a copy of the
Noli to Father Rector Gregorio Echavarria of University of Santo Tomas
for examination by the committee of the faculty.
Fortunately, Rizal found a copy in the hands of a friend. He was able to get
it and gave it to Governor General Terrero.
