IPv4 & IPv6 2

What is IP address?
 An IP address is a unique set of numbers that
identifies a machine on a network, whether it is a
computer, server, electronic device, router, phone,
or another device.

IPv4 & IPv6 3

Who created IP address?
Vint Cerf was one of the creators
of IP addresses.

He created it while working for

the US Department of Defense's
Advanced Research Projects
Agency (DARPA).

IPv4 & IPv6 4

IPv4
Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) is the fourth version of
the Internet Protocol(IP). It is one of the core protocols of
standards based networking methods in the internet.

IPv4 Header

IPv4 & IPv6 7

IPv4 Header Structure

 basic IPv4 header contains 12 fields.

 each field of the IPv4 header has a specific use.
 Shaded field are removed in IPv6.

IPv6 Packet Format 8

IPv6
Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) is a set of
specifications from the Internet Engineering
Task Force(IETF) that’s essentially an upgrade
of IPv4.

IPv4 vs IPv6 Header

IPv4 & IPv6 12

IPv6 Desirable Features

• Support billions of hosts in a

scalable fashion
• Allow fast processing at routers
• Support real-time application
• Provide security
• Multicast support
• Mobility Support
• Need to be backward compatible

IPv4 & IPv6 13

Advantages of IPv6 over IPv4 (1)

Feature IPv4 IPv6

Source and destination 32 bits 128 bits
address
IPsec Optional required
Payload ID for QoS in No identification Using Flow label field
the header
Fragmentation Both router and the Only supported at the
sending hosts sending hosts
Header checksum included Not included
Resolve IP address to a broadcast ARP request Multicast Neighbor
link layer address Solicitation message

IPv4 & IPv6 14

Advantages of IPv6 over IPv4 (2)

Feature IPv4 IPv6

Determine the address of ICMP Router ICMPv6 Router
the best default gateway Discovery(optional) Solicitation and Router
Advertisement (required)
Send traffic to all nodes Broadcast Link-local scope all-
on a subnet nodes multicast address
Configure address Manually or DHCP Autoconfiguration
Manage local subnet (IGMP) Multicast Listener
group membership Discovery (MLD)

IPv4 & IPv6 15

Summary
Without this numeric protocol, we would not be able to connect to
internet and without internet we would be buying storage devices like
CDs, because without internet cloud storage would not work. So IP
address is must for internet connection and therefore we can use both
IPv4 and IPv6 to send emails and data.
