WHAT IS ACOHOLISM?
5. Epsilon-type alcoholism
The so-called periodic alcoholism occurs in subjects who present loss of control when drinking
and behavioral problems, but consume sporadically, spending long periods between taking and taking.
TREATMENTS AND PREVENTION
FOR ALCOHOLISM
MEDICINES
-Disulfiram: Causes unpleasant symptoms like nausea and redness of the skin every time you drink
alcohol. Knowing that drinking will cause these unpleasant effects can help keep you away from
alcohol.
-Naltrexone: Blocks receptors in the brain that make you feel good when you drink alcohol. It can
also reduce your cravings to drink. This can help you reduce your alcohol consumption.
-Acamprosate: Helps avoid alcohol after you have stopped drinking. It works on multiple brain
systems to reduce your cravings, especially right after you have stopped drinking
THERAPIES
• Cognitive behavioral therapy helps identify feelings and situations that can lead to excessive
alcohol consumption.
• Motivational Enhancement Therapy (or Motivational Stimulation Therapy) helps build and
strengthen motivation to change your drinking habit.
• Marriage and family counseling includes spouses and other family members. It can help repair
and improve your family relationships.
• Brief interventions are short, individual or small group counseling sessions. They include
between one to four sessions.
