ELECTRICITY
KEY TERMS
 Electricity : Electricity is a physical ocurrence
involving electric charges and their effects when in
motion and at rest .
 Electron Flow: Current ( electron flow ) is the
number of electrons flowing through an electrical
circuit.
 Conductor:is a material that has very little
resistance and permits electrons to move through it
easily.
 Insulator: is a material that has a very high
resistance and resists the flow of electrons.
 Voltage: (V) is the amount of electrical preassure in
a circuit.
 Resistance: is the opposition to electron flow.
 Ohm’s law:is the relationship between voltage (E), current ( I), and
resistance (R) in a circuit.
 Magnetism: is a force that interacts with other magnets and
ferromagnetic materials.
 Electromagnetic Induction:is the process by which voltage is induced in a
wire by a magnetic field when lines of force cut across the wire.
 Alternating Current: (AC) is a flow of electrons that reverses its
directions of flow at regular intervals.
 Direct Current(DC) is a flow of electrons in only one direction.
 Power distribution:is the process of delivering electrical power to where
it is needed.
 Grounding: electrical circuits are grounded to safeguard equipment and
personnel against the hazards of electrical shock.
 Harzadous Location:is a location where there is an increased risk of fire
or explosion due to the presence of flammable gases, vapor, liquids
,combustible dust,or easily-ignitable fibers of flyings.
 Continuity Tester:is a device that indicates if a circuit is open or closed.
 Voltage Tester: is a device that indicates approximate voltage level or
type (AC or DC) by the movements of a pointer on a scale.
 Multimeter: is a test tool used to measure two or more electrical values.
 Transformer:is an electrical device that uses electromagnetism to change AC
voltage from one level to another.
 Contactor:is a control device that uses a small control current to energize or
de-energize the load connected to it.
 Overload Relay:is a time-delay device that senses motor current temperatures
and disconnects the motor form the power supply if the current is excessive for
a certain lenght of time.
 Fuse Circuit Breaker: a fuse is an overcurrent protection device with a fusible
link that melts and opens the circuit on an overcurrent condition. A circuit
breaker is a device with a mechanical mechanism thay may mannually of
atomatically open a circuit when an overload condition or short circuit occurs.
 Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter: a ground fault exists when an unintanded
current path is established between ground and an ungrounded (hot)
conductor.
 Switch : is a device that starts or stops the flow of electrical energy.
 Solenoid : is a device that converts electrical energy to a linear, mechanical
forces. Solenoid use is common in the operation of values, clutches,
contactors, and motor starters.
 Electrical Safety:improper electrical wiring or misuse of electricity causes
destruction of equipment and fire damage to property.
 Authorized Indivudual: is a knowledgeable individual to whom the authority
and responsability to perform a specific assigment has been given.
