Need Statement Workplan Design Prototype Testing Conclusion

 Approximately 6.6 million people with visual disability in United States

(reference)
 Problems with product identification and home inventory management
 Need for an user friendly inventory control system that can be easily accessed by
visually impaired
 Able to scan barcodes and identify the product
 Store the scanned products to inventory list as necessary for easy access and shopping
assistance
Need Statement Workplan Design Prototype Testing Conclusion

 Current solutions
 Smartphone apps (Digit Eyes, Can Barcode, Tap-Tap
See)
 Portable Devices (ID Mate Quest, Scan Talker, Voila
talking label scanner)
 Identify the object through barcode scanning and image
processing ID Mate Quest

 Problems
 Do not build inventory list
 ID Mate Quest
 Not compatible with accessibility features (voiceover
screen reader)

Digit Eyes
Need Statement Workplan Design Prototype Testing Conclusion

 Task 1: Understanding the problem to be addressed

 A. Talk with mentors to understand the biomedical significance of the project
 B. Direct communication with end users (people with vision impairment) to better understand the problem
 Task 2: Obtain information on currently available solutions
 A. Research on similar assistive technology to obtain greater insight to the project
 B. Understand the basic functioning mechanism of the devices to avoid problems with devices
terminologies and functions for future modifications.
 Task 3: Modify the best possible solution
 A. Identify the problems with current solution
 B. A solution that meets the user needs will be modeled.
 Task 4: Build the Prototype and Test it
 A. Build the Prototype: Integrate scanner and inventory software in to a testable smartphone application.
 B. Test the Prototype: People with vision impairment will be requested to volunteer in testing the
prototype. The accuracy of the design will be determined.

Need Statement Workplan Design Prototype Testing Conclusion

 Higher time allowed for each product to scan would probably yield more results but it
would not be reasonable
 Barcode detection mechanism with audio feedback would reduce the scan time
 Barcode localization engine
 Ability of the app to notify subject with audio feedback whenever the barcode is within the field
of camera view
 Smith and Kettlewell Eye Research Institute has developed this technology in Android
(DroidBlade open source project)
 Development of an assistive technology for people with vision impairment
 To help keep track of home inventory
 To help export inventory for shopping assistance
