What Is Coronavirus?

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses

that cause illness in humans, animals and birds.

It was first discovered in the 1960s, with its name

"coronavirus" derived from the Latin "corona"
meaning crown or halo.

They are common amongst animals worldwide, but

only a handful of them are known to affect humans
(7 strains).

Rarely, coronaviruses can evolve and spread from

animals to humans.
What Is Coronavirus?
In cows and pigs they may cause diarrhea, while in chickens it
can cause an upper respiratory disease.

In humans, the virus causes respiratory infections ranging from the common
cold to more severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
(SARS-CoV) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV).

Coronaviruses are believed to cause a significant percentage of all common

colds in human adults and children worldwide.

Most people get infected with coronaviruses at one point in their lives, but
symptoms are typically mild to moderate.
