Misbehavior of Organism

(BF Skinner)

BY: LABNAO,Luzviminda C.
Part 3 of 4 BF SKINNER
 Skinner’s (1974,1987)view was that
understanding of the behavior of laboratory
animals can generalize to human behavior.*
 Human behavior is Shaped by 3 different
forces –
-NATURAL SELECTIONS
-CULTURAL PRACTICES
-INDIVIDUAL’S HISTORY OF
REINFORCEMENT
NATURAL SELECTION

 We are shaped by the contigencies of

survivals
 Individual behavior that is reinforcing tends
to be repeated*
 Contingencies of reinforcements and
contigencies of survival interact.
 Take note: Not every remnant of natural
selectionhelped shape some human behavior
Ex: Overeating
Cultural Evolution

 Selection is responsible for those cultural

practices that have survived, just as selection
plays a role in human’s evolutionary and also
with contingencies reinforcements.
Inner States*

 Self Awareness
Skinner believed that human are aware of
their consciousness*
 Drives- is the effect of deprivation and
satiation and to the corresponding
probability that the organism will respond.
(ather than the cause of the behavior)
Inner States*

 Emotions -are not attributed to behaviors.

-Contingencies of survival
-contingencies of reinforcement*
 Purpose and Intention- exist within the skin,
but they are not subject to direct outside
scrutiny.*
Complex Behavior *

 Higher Mental Processes*-

Human thoght can be understood as long
as one does not resort to a hypothetical
fiction such as “mind”*
 Creativity-As accidental traits, arising from
mutation, are selected by their contribution
to survival, so accidental variations in
behavior are selected by their reinforcing
consequence
 Unconscious Behavior-
People rarely observe the relatonship
between genetic and environmental variables
and their own behavior, nearly all our
beahvior is unconsciously motivated.
Dreams – Is a covert and symbolic forms of
behavior that areComplex Behavior*
subject to the same contingencies of
reinforcement as other behaviors are.
Complex Behavior *

 Social Behavior- Individuals establish groups

because they have been rewarded for doing
so.
Control of Human Behavior*

Social Control*
-Operant Conditioning
-Describing contingencies
-Deprivation and satiation
-Physical restraints
Control of Human Behavior

Self Control
Freedom is an imaginary
concept*
Unhealthy Personality*

 Counteracting Strategies*-
-Escape
-Revolt
-Use passive resistance
Inappropriate Behaviors

 Inappropriate behaviors follow from self-

defeating techniques of counteracting social
control or from unsuccessful attempts at self-
control especially when either of these
failures is accompanied by strong emotion.
Inappropriate Behaviors

 Examples:
1.Excessively Vigorous Behavior
2.Excessively Restrained Behavior
3. Blocking out the reality
4. Self defeating knowledge
5.Self Punishment
That’s all
