A PHENOMENOLOGICAL

STUDY ON THE
DECREASING NUMBER OF
BS
ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS
IN THE UNIVERSITY OF
MINDANAO
BENOGSODAN, R.S. & DAQUIZ, D.M.
Background of the Study
• Globally, the number of students who studied Bachelor of Science in Architecture the
University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka has declined in recent years (Hettiarachchi, 2016).
• In the study conducted by Danga (2016), the enrollment status of Higher Education
Institutions (HEIs) of five provinces in Region 02 namely: Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela,
Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino from academic years 2013-2014 to 2015-2016 showed a
decrease of enrollees in Engineering, Architecture and Technology Education
• In Kiblawan, Davao, level of barriers such as effective involvement to education has a
significant effect on student achievement (Banuelos & mLovitos, 2013).
Research Objectives

The researchers’ objective is to identify the

factors that affect why the number of students in
Bachelor of Science in Architecture in the
Research Questions
University of Mindanao decline as their year/level
increases. We want to further comprehend how
these factors affect the current Architecture
students’ perception in pursuing Architecture. 1.)  What are the factors that affect why the
number of students in Bachelor of Science in
Architecture decline as their year or level
increases?
2.) How do these factors affect the current
Architecture student’s decision in pursuing
architecture?
Theoretical Lens
• The motivation from their environment (Johnson & Jones, 2006)
• Misperception (Chandra et. al., 2011)
• General deviance theory (Glavin, 2016)
• Deviant Affiliation theory (Glavin, 2016)
• Poor Family Socialization theory (Glavin, 2016)
• Architecture interest (Birch and Savage, 2012)

Scope and Limitations
The study is conducted only to evaluate perceptions and determine
the factors affecting the declining number of Architecture student’s
as their year level increases.
Research Design
The study utilizes the qualitative case-oriented approach using a random
sampling method. In this method, each member of the population has an
equal chance of being selected as the subject (Random Sampling, n.d.).

This study wants to comprehend a particular event of several phenomena by

means of analyzing the data of each. Qualitative research is properly
searching findings to questions through the examination of various social
settings and the individuals who inhabited the settings (Berg, 2009).
Research Locale
The study will be conducted in the
University of Mindanao, Maa Davao
C i t y. The respondents will be
interviewed in the school premises.
These respondents will be interviewed
via one-to-one and group-in depth
i n t e r v i e w.
Research Participants
The College of Architecture students in the University of Mindanao were chosen
a s t h e r e s p o n d e n t s o f t h e s t u d y. T h e r e s e a r c h e r s c o n s i d e r e d a t l e a s t 1 0
participants in the six qualifications equally divided among the 4 variables:

This study will cover only the

personal and actual experiences of the
college Architecture students of the
University of Mindanao.
The responses of the
10 study-participants to the
questions in the interview
and the observation will be
the primary sources of
discussion.
Data Analysis Tools
The researchers will be using coding as a tool in analyzing the
information. It is labeling each participant, their responses and
questions given (Saldana, 2013). This study will use cross-case
analysis. This involves both the variable-oriented analysis and the case-
oriented analysis.
Source of Information
Information will be collected through direct encounter with individuals
through one-to-one and group in-depth interviews(Henn et al., 2009).
