RENAISSANCE in

• ENGLAND
Renaissance architecture reached Britain via France
and the low countries (Netherlands)
• Timber gradually fell into disuse
• Stone and bricks were the popular building material
• Renaissance made it appearance in England with
crude Early Renaissance of the Tudor period,
specially Elizabethan and Jacobean (about 1505 to
1625)
• Sharply followed the Stuart, common wealth and
restoration period (1625-1702), this is the period of
Mature Classic of Inigo Jones and the Baroque
production of Sir Cristopher Wren (1625-1702)

by Georgian period (1702-1830)
which saw a later Palladianism and its lighter version
followed by Greek revival
• From here onwards comes the period of Post
Renaissance and the Modern movement
EARLY PERIOD
• First Tudor Monarch of England is Henry VIII
• Henry VIII attempted to introduce Italian and French
modes into the buildings of the court (1509-1547)
• The introduction of Renaissance motifs (theme) on
large scale took place during the reign of Queen
Elizabeth, this have been done with the help of
French, Flamish and Italian books
• Classic details were planted on Gothic buildings
• The first period of Renaissance in England is known
as Elizabethan style, especially for mansions and for
the brick buildings
• Brick buildings then came into fashion and had the
merit of picturesque effect

• A term applied to English early Renaissance
architecture, arrived in England during the reign
of Elizabeth I
• Features are Dutch gable, Flemish strapwork in
geometric designs, towers, parapets, balustrades and
chimney stacks produced an effective skyline
• Windows- oriel bay windows with mullions and
transoms
• Elizabethan mansions looked outwards
• Transition style with Gothic features and
Renaissance detail
• Regularity, symmetry, and mixed classical and
Mannerist elements characterize design

• E plan
• Homes featured a very long gallery, kitchen on one
side, with the living area on the right, long gallery
featuring very nice artwork of some of the most
famous artists of this time period.
• layout of the home with the space designated for
formal gardens
• Walls adorned with gothic type artwork to give detail
and much more contemporary feel to it.
• Elizabethan era can be considered to be the
beginning of the Renaissance period

• Roofs have irregular silhouettes, Composed of
parapets, balustrades, pinnacles, lanterns, towers,
roofs, and chimneys
• A lot of the style was taken from the Dutch and
Italian Renaissance
• symmetrical layouts, chimney's on both sides, gables
that matched, and a centered entryway into the large
homes
• The gables were frequently curved and had lots of
detail on them
