WELCOME to 7 Grade

th
WELCOME!
Welcome to 7th Grade! We have a very busy and exciting year ahead of us. The seventh
grade team is dedicated to creating and establishing a motivating, fun, challenging, and safe
learning experience.

The expectation for this year is for your Scholar to come to class prepared, enjoy learning,
and to become a critical thinker. We believe for ALL students to be successful,
communication between the team and parents will be the key. We will be communicating
often through Remind 101 and our websites regarding your child’s academic progress,
school events, and other activities as they arise. We anticipate our partnership will assist in
your Scholar being successful this year.

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
ELA is an essential subject that provides students with the necessary skills to become independent readers
and learners. Through the mastery of the five components of ELA – reading, writing, speaking, listening, and
language – students will become well-equipped with valuable skills they will carry with them throughout their
lives.

Through effective ELA teaching and learning, students will learn how to do the following:
• Demonstrate independence
• Build strong content knowledge
• Respond to varying demands of audience, task, purpose and discipline
• Comprehend and critique
• Use technology and digital media strategically
• Understand the perspectives and cultures of others.

Our ELA curriculum includes independent readings, group work, and cumulative projects that allows the
classroom to become a fun and engaging learning environment.
MATH
In 7th grade, students focus on connecting their previous understanding of Eureka Math. The
foundation of the mathematics program is built around Tennessee Common Core Standards for
Mathematical Content and Standards for Mathematical Practice. Woven throughout the modules
are the depth and rigor students need to prepare for career-readiness and college-level courses. In
addition, Eureka Math prepares students to meet the challenge of the TNReady state test. Students
will be asked to observe, explain, and make conjectures about the following:
•Ratios and Proportional Relationships
•Number System
•Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities
•Geometry
•Statistics and Probability
SCIENCE
Welcome to 7th Grade Science! Scholars will be encouraged daily to have a Growth
Mindset; which is the belief that intelligence can be developed. We want Scholars
to understand and have the confidence that they can get smarter through hard work,
the use of effective strategies, and help from others when needed. Some 7th Grade
Science concepts are: balancing equations (Physical Science), and DNA (Life
Science). Together we will engage, explore, and explain Science concepts making
real world connections through content, labs, and projects.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Social Studies seeks to arm students with knowledge about the world, nation
and society around them, through disciplines such as political science, history,
economics, geography, and anthropology. Social studies is defined by the
American National Council for Social Studies as "the integrated study of the
social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence." With such
knowledge, our students will better understand and be able to make informed
decisions about civic issues that affect them and their families as well.
REINFORCEMENT/INTERVENTION

Intervention/Reinforcement is a time set aside daily to improve

educational outcomes in core classes. During this time, students can
expect to engage in instructionally appropriate learning based on
their academic needs. Students participate in small group
instruction, use SCS District approved online platforms to practice
skills, and engage in fun, interactive learning activities to deepen
their knowledge.

Electives Help Students Learn to Focus—and Achieve

“Electives classes reveal the skill sets of some students that might not be
obvious in their other classes, helping them see their strengths and affording
them opportunities to be of value to their classmates. Reaching performance
goals or learning a new language requires students to be organized, to set goals,
and to evaluate if they’re meeting those goals.” (Rambo, Ernie)
