• In 1991 Linus Benedict Torvalds write the kernel for a new

OS which is then known as Linux in his college days at
University of Helsinki
• Linux has file structure like then existing OS UNIX but the
kernel was original idea of Linus Torvalds

Requirements for Ubuntu Deployment

 For Ubuntu v10 04 Desktop Edition (Lucid lynx )



§ PC with at least 1 GB RAM and 5 GB Hard Disk Free Space

for OS installation
§ WINE Package (“WINdows Emulator” later changed to
Wine Is Not an Emulator)
§ DOS EMU
§ Proprietary drivers for visual effects etc if necessary
§ Extra space may be needed as per user’s requirement of
software



 Installation
• It takes approximately 1 hour to Install, Configure and run
whole new Ubuntu system
• No advance user interaction is needed for installation
• Almost all Windows based applications are compatible
with Ubuntu by a windows emulator application WINE
• DOS Emu and DOS Box are used for DOS applications
 About Packages

• Drivers are available (Nvidia or ATI graphics drivers)*

• Emulators for Windows and DOS based applications
• Management tools for IT Infrastructure monitoring are
available
 (for eg Ebox/SSH/Munin etc )
• A central local Package Repository server can be
configured easily for application, dependencies,
patches and updates etc


 * Poor Hardware Issue is the biggest Drawback.

§ The peripherals Ubuntu supported is limited such as printers,
scanners and cameras
§ Ubuntudoes not support Digital Rights Management-[DRM]
protected music
§ Customized software for MS-Windows Platform requires
additional configuration But no problem with JAVA based
applications
§ Hardware Support issue is the biggest drawback in Ubuntu. Very
Limited Support. No Plug n Play.
§ Application Dependency: Lots of Dependency Required for
Application. An Internet Connection is must for easy
Accessibility.

Limitations in Present Scenario at
UTIITSL


§ Visual Basic Based customized application needs to

be configured as per Ubuntu requirement [eg PAN
application]

§ Master Craft a customized application developed
by M/s TCS for MS Windows needs further
customization to be compatible with Ubuntu
§
§ Few devices like Scanners and Printers are not
compatible with Ubuntu
 [For egOur Mumbai Corporate office and Branches having
HP Scan Jet 8350 Scanner which are not compatible with
Ubuntu]


found that Ubuntu is compatible with our most of
the Department:

Advance User only, So for a normal User still it is complex
§ Application Dependency resolving needs an Active Internet
Connection to resolve dependency automatically.
