INTRODUCTION
VITAMIN.
A vitamin is an organic compound and a
vital nutrient that an organism requires in
a limited amount and can not be
synthesized by the organism in sufficient
quantities.
They can be obtained through diet and
supplements.
Cont…
Vitamins can be classified as.
 Fat soluble vitamins;
These are vitamins which are absorbed
through the intestinal tract with the
help of lipids.
They include vitamin A,D,E and K (ADEK).
Cont…..

 Water soluble vitamins;

These are vitamins that dissolve easily in
water and are readily excreted from the
body because are not readily stored in
the body.
They include vitamin B and C .
APPLICATIONS OF VITAMINS
MANAGEMENT OF ANEMIA
Vitamins are used in the treatment of
anemia through their supplements.
Vitamin B12,used in treatment of
megaloblastic anemia. This can be
through diet or suppliments in pill form
or as nasal spray. Injections are
reecomended in severe anemia.
• Folic acid suplements are given in
patients with sickle cell disease to
increase the production of red blood
cells. It is given orally once per day
PREVENTION BIRTH DEFECTS.
Folic acid suplements are given to women
before conception and during the first
four months of pregnancy to reduce the
risk of having children with neural tube
defects. It may also help to prevent
miscarriage. It is given orally once per
day.
MANAGEMENT OF BLEEDING DISORDERS

 Vitamin K helps to treat and prevent

unusual bleeding by increasing the
body’s production of blood clotting
factors. These factors include II,VII,IX and
X
 Dosage depends on the condition and
response to treatment of the patient

 Route of administration can be oral or by

injection.
TREATMENT OF CANCER
Studies have revealed that high dosage of
Vitamin C administration by intravenous
route kill cancer cells effectively although
some side effects such as severe
inflammation have been reported.
IMMUNE STABILAZATION

 Vitamins have a role in the immune

system which extends to both innate
and adaptive immune responses
especially in infants .
• Such vitamins include Vitamin A and
Vitamin D which modulate tissue specific
immune response, preventing
inflammation and autoimmunity.
RECOVERY AND REPAIR OF BODY TISSUES.

 Some vitamins and minerals are necessary

for repair and recovery of body tissues .such
vitamins include

• Vitamin C ,is necessary for collagen synthesis

and is strong antioxidant.
• Vitamin E, has been demonstrated to
reduce exercise induced muscle damage.

• Both Vitamin E and C are important in

treatment of arthritic conditions.
GROWTH OF BODY TISSUES
 Body tissues growth can be stimulated by
some vitamins .eg
• Vitamin A is required in cell growth
especially in stimulating epithelial and
bone formation hence support rapid
growth. Infants are administered with oral-
liquid of retinyl palmitate or retinyl acetate
• This vitamin is also used to improve sight
eg night blindness.
• Vitamin D promotes healthy bone
tissue,largely by promoting the
absorption of calcium which is required
for bone strength. This helps to prevent
bone disorders eg osteoporosis and
osteomalacia.
INDUCTION OF APPETITE
Vitamin B complex is used to induce
appetite in patients who have lost
appetite due different causes eg. Typhoid
It is administered through oral tablets and
syrup in children
MANAGEMENT OF NEUROPATHY
Vitamin B complex is used in treatment of
neuropathy due to diabetes mellitus
,vitamin deficiency or drugs eg isonizid
