Repair
Reduce
- to lessen the amount of trash that will
add up to the environment.
- This can be done by buying and using
less materials that are readily
disposable and non-biodegradable.
Ways in reducing wastes
1. Buy rechargeable batteries
instead of disposable
batteries for our gadgets.
This way, we can minimize
waste and save money at
the same time.
Ways in reducing wastes
2. Buy products in bigger packs than
those packed in small sachets. While
doing the latter prevents excessive
use of a product, such practice can
increase production of non-
biodegradable waste because more
plastic sachets will be discarded.
3. Another way to reduce waste is to
reuse materials.
Reuse
Reduce
- to find another use for materials that
have already been used or that have
already served its purpose.
Ways in reusing wastes
1. Using reusable bags when
shopping or going to the
grocery store;
2. Using reusable containers
when packing, storing food
or drinks, and even when
buying drinks;
Ways in reusing wastes
3. Rethink first and consider
the properties of materials
and try to find some use
for it in some instances.
4. Avoiding to buy new
materials when you still
have supplies that can be
used.
Ways in reusing wastes
5. Donating clothes and
other useful materials to
some organization that
conduct relief operations
during calamities; and
6. Conducting a garage sale,
not just of clothes but of
other items that are still
functional.
Did you know that…
•Reducing and reusing
materials help minimize
the generation of waste
materials.
Recycle
Reduce
- to create a new product out of a
material that has already served its
purpose.

* RECYCLING means producing new

material
* REUSING means using same material
over and over again
Recycle
Reduce
- It prevents wastage of material that can be
actually useful for a different purpose. It also
reduces the use of raw materials.

Example:
* recycling of old newspaper to make
writing paper, instead of cutting trees
Did you know that…
•Recycling produces a new
material out of discarded ones so
it prevents wastage of material
that can actually be useful for a
different purpose. It also reduces
the use of raw materials.
Recover

Ways in recovering energy
1. Incineration technology – burning piles of
garbage in a huge incinerator to produce
heat and electricity.
2. Segregation – garbage does not go straight
to dumpsites. Most of the time, garbage
collected are segregated in a Materials
Recovery Facility (MRF). In an MRF, collected
garbage is segregated in order to recover
recyclables and biodegradable materials that
can be used as compost ingredients.
Recover
Recycle
Reduce
Repair
- to fix slightly broken things to make
them useful again.

Example:
* Repairable materials include
furniture, appliances andclothes.
Did you know that…
•Recovering and repairing are
two more strategies that can
be done in addition to the
3Rs in order to effectively
manage and minimize waste.
Did you know that…
•We can harvest the energy from
garbage through a process called
pyrolysis. Energy can be extracted
by heating waste materials in
sealed vessel. This can be used to
generate steam and electricity in a
turbine.
Quick Quiz!
1.How does reusing differ
from recycling?
2.How can energy that comes
from garbage be recovered?
3.What benefits can we get
from recycling materials?
Importance of Practicing the
5Rs.
It provides opportunities for
people to earn money by:
1. selling recyclable materials to junk shops;
2. selling handcrafted products made of
recyclable materials; and
3. putting up their own junk shop where they buy
recyclable materials which they later sell to
bigger companies who are capable of recycling
materials.
Did you know that…
•Practicing the 5Rs strategy to
manage waste helps solve
environmental problems. It also
makes our environment clean and
beautiful, and provides
opportunities for people to earn
money.
Did you know that…
•When you buy a
product,16% of the
money you spends pay
for the packaging, which
usually ends up in trash.
