OF STEEL REINFORCEMENT IN
SELF CONSOLIDATING CONCRETE
WITH AND ZEOLITE MINERALS
STEPHEN JOHN C. CLEMENTE, MSCE
Corrosion Behavior of Steel Reinforcement in Self Consolidating
Concrete with Diatomite and Zeolite Minerals Exposed to Sulfuric Acid

INTRODUCTION
RC buildings are so durable compared to other materials,
but one of its problem is it’s susceptibility to corrosion
that can cause damages or even collapse specially when
triggered by earthquake.

SCC can be utilized for a very tight reinforcement

arrangement because of its ability to flow on its own
weight
Improving the mechanical properties of concrete such as
decreasing the porosity, soptivity, internal and surface
absorption of the concrete will lead to decrease in
penetration of harmful chemical that will lead to
corrosion.

INTRODUCTION
Natural Zeolite (NZ) has been proven to be useful to SCC
in terms of improving its rheological parameters such as
flow ability, passing ability, resistance to segregation and
viscosity (Clemente and Oreta, 2015)

Zeolite is hydrated alumino-silicates that is primarily

composed of SiO2 and Al2O3 which is a pozzolanic
material similar to flyash (Ranjbar, et.al., 2013).

INTRODUCTION

The behavior of corrosion of reinforcing bar in the self-

compacting will be studied. The concrete will be self-
compacting concrete in accordance to the standard of
EFNARC. Corrosion resistance will be measured using
Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS)
(Gerengi, et.al., 2013).

Artificial Neural Network and Genetic Algorithm will be

utilized to derive equations, parametric testing and
optimize the mixture.

MAIN OBJECTIVE

The main objective is to Study the behavior of

corrosion of reinforcing bar in self compacting
concrete with added zeolite mineral

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE:
a. To determine the permeable porosity, surface and internal absorption and
sorptivity of self-compacting concrete
b. To determine the rheological and compressive strength of self-compacting
concrete in accordance to EFNARC 2002 and ACI C 39.
c. To measure the corrosion resistance of self compacting concrete subjected in
sulfuric acid using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
d. To study the relationship of rheology and compressive strength to corrosion
resistance of SCC
e. To create Artificial Neural Network Model that can predict the corrosion
behavior
f. To analyze the behavior of corrosion in SCC using parametric study
g. To determine the optimum mixture of self compacting concrete that signifies
highest corrosion resistance and strength using genetic algorithm.

SCOPES AND LIMITATIONS

The design mix of the SCC will be determined using the standard of EFNARC.
Ordinary Portland cement (Type IP), crushed gravel and sand were used in the
mixture. Water content will be determined during experimentation. Superplasticizer or
high range water reducing agent will be added in the mixture. Zeolite will be replaced
to cement by weight up to 20%.

Sorptivity, surface and internal absorption and permeability will be tested in order to
determine its relationship with corrosion resistance.

Corrosion resistance of SCC will be determined using electrochemical impedance
spectroscopy which need to submerged all the samples in a Sulfur solution.

Artificial neural network and genetic algorithm will be used to determine the optimum
mixture of SCC that provides the maximum corrosion resistance and compressive
strength.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Engineers will be allowed to identify the most appropriate concrete
proportion to ensure that only the initiation phase of corrosion
development will occur within the service life of the structure.

This study will provide a comprehensive understanding on the
underlying behavior of corrosion in the initiation phase as influenced by
the material components of the concrete mixture.

Protecting the environment through reducing the carbon immersion of
cement production is one of the main concern of the study. This will be
obtained by partially replacing ordinary Portland cement by zeolite
mineral to enhance its mechanical properties

RESEARCH NOVELTY
No research/study has been conducted that optimizing the mixture of SCC with zeolite
replacement for corrosion resistance

The models that predicts the corrosion resistance of concrete is based on different factors
such as (1) concrete mixtures (2) physical and mechanical properties concrete (3) both 1 and
2

Zeolite is a new material that can be utilized in concrete to enhance its properties
