Five W’s

◇ WHAT? ADDIE Model

◇ WHO? Created by the Center for Educational
Technology
◇ WHERE? Florida State University
◇ WHY? For the U.S. Army
◇ WHEN? 1975

(Branson et al., 1975; Watson, 1981)

Setting ADDIE is used

According to Bates, (2015) ADDIE is
“heavily used in corporate e-learning
and training.”

ADDIE Example
An energy company has a new software for solar
panel technicians. The Instructional designers were
asked to train the employees on how to use this new
software.

1 Analysis
• Problem: New software need to be learnt
• Audience: Solar panel installation techs
• Information: Gather from the learners by giving them surveys
• Constraints: Must use resources (company computers &
software)
2 Design
• Objective: Techs will be able to use the software
• Specify content to be delivered by sitting with the SME
• They decided to use an online audiovisual course with graphics
• The tools they will use are Adobe Illustrator and Adobe
Premiere
• The interface will be storyline
• They will create a storyboard of the course
• They will prototype the course
• All of the above will be done using the company resources
3 Develop
• The Instructional designer will create the storyboard
• The graphic designer will create the needed audiovisual
aspects
• The developer will take the graphic designers work and use
the storyboard as a guide with navigation in line with the
storyboard
• The developer Makes sure everything is inline with the
storyboard with no errors
4 Implement
• The developer integrates the course onto the LMS
• He makes sure there are no errors from his side
• Then the technicians are asked to complete the course
5 Evaluation
• The Instructional designer will give the techs a questionnaire
• The instructional designer will give the techs’ manager a
feedback form to see weather the course met the set objective
• The instructional designer will evaluate the course
• A report is done of any changes needed for future references.
Strengths & Weaknesses
• Promotes good quality design • Not Learner centered (Behaviorist
• Helps develop clear learning rather than Constructivist)
objectives • What to do but not how to do
• Carefully structured content • Expensive (high division of labor)
• Controlled workloads • Time consuming
• Integrated media • Inflexible linear approach
• Relevant activities
