WHAT IS A SENTENCE?
A sentence is :
1. Group of words

3. Can stand alone

4. Expresses a complete thought


CHARACTERISTIC OF A
SENTENCE?
A complete sentence has 3 characteristic :
It begins with a capital letter

Ends with full stop (.), question mark (?),


or exclamation point (!)

Containing at least one main clause

 Adverb clause is a clause which have


function as an adverb.

 To connect independent clause and


adverb clause, we use subordinate
conjunction in front of dependent
clause (adverb clause).
 Adverb clause has many subordinating conjunction such as:

FOR EXAMPLE :

 She brushes her teeth in the


morning after waking up.

 Although it was very long, the


movie was still enjoyable
Formula :
 Because my coffee was too cold,

COMPLEX SENTENCE WITH ADJECTIVE CLAUSE

 Adjective clause is a clause that


modifies or gives information about a
noun or pronoun.

 The adjective clause is connected to


independent clause by relative
pronoun.
 The relative pronouns are:

 The man, whose car is antique,


works as a lecturer.

 The woman whom you saw last


night is my sister.

 The town where I grew up is

 Noun clause is a clause used as a noun in the


sentence.

 A noun clause can act as Subject, Object, and


Predicative Nominative.

 The noun clause begin with noun clause


markers.

Complex Sentence?

There is only one reason to care about complex


sentences : comma placement

1 Comma are used when the sentence starts


with the dependent clause and aren’t used
when the dependent clause comes in the For Example :
middle or end of the sentence
I became a people-watcher when I lost
all my friends.

When I lost all my friends, I became a


people-watcher.
Why should we care about
Complex Sentence?

2 Use commas with nonessential dependent


clauses that start with relative pronoun

For Example :

My sister who lives in London was arrested. → the clause is essential

My sister, who lives in London, was arrested. → the clause is nonessential

3. Even though you force me, I can’t go out; I


have a big test tomorrow.
