MARIJUANA
How does marijuana
affect your body ?
The effects of marijuana on the body are often immediate. Longer-term
effects may depend on how you take it, how much you use, and how
often you use it. The exact effects are hard to determine because
marijuana has been illegal in the U.S., making studies difficult and
expensive to conduct. Is marijuana harmful? Is it helpful? Why does
the government not want to legalize marijuana? These are some of the
question I will try to answer during my powerpoint presentation. The e
y
model picture shows many of the symptoms a person can develop
from using marijuana. All of these symptoms vary depending on
personal usage, and individual health.
Is Marijuana harmful?

the laws are shifting, the debate over legalized

marijuana continues. Although some say marijuana is
just as safe as, or even safer than alcohol, others argue
that pot causes a lot more harm than just a serious
buzz. Although there isn't much evidence that the
occasional toke leads to long-term health problems,
researchers are concerned that long-term, heavy pot
smoking can leave lingering effects. between tobacco
smoke and lung cancer is well-known. Studies show that
marijuana smoke has many of the same harmful
substances as tobacco, and often more of them. Among
the hazards are: Benzo(a)pyrene, Benz(a)anthracene,
Phenols, Vinyl chlorides, Nitrosamines, reactive oxygen
species.
Can marijuana help PTSD?

When it comes to marijuana, it seems like this self-medication theory may be correct. it has
been found that veterans with PTSD who also use marijuana say that marijuana is specifically
used to reduce their PTSD symptoms, particularly the hyperarousal symptoms of PTSD. In
addition, studies have also found that PTSD symptoms are associated with the use of marijuana
to cope with unpleasant emotions, such as anxiety and sadness. Another study showed that
difficulties tolerating unpleasant emotions contributed to the use of marijuana among people
who were experiencing symptoms of PTSD.
Is marijuana
helpful to any
illnesses?
No, marijuana puts smokers at comparatively higher risk for lung
health complications due to the fact that it has four times the tar,
three to five times more carbon monoxide and over 50% more
carcinogenic hydrocarbons than cigarettes. Just three or four
joints cause as much lung damage as 20 cigarettes. Long-term
marijuana abuse often results in lowered motivation and an
impaired ability to function in daily life. Some users experience
anxiety, panic attacks, respiratory illnesses and increased heart
rate and risk of heart attack. Though research is not definitive,
chronic marijuana abuse has been linked to mental illness such
as anxiety, depression and schizophrenia.
Does it have connection to
cancer?
Lung cancer and smoking often, but not always, go
hand in hand. As lung cancer stages advance, lung
cancer symptoms include coughing, wheezing,
shortness of breath, and bloody mucus. Treatment
includes surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation. Even
as more people use it, health experts aren’t sure
whether smoking pot raises your odds of getting
lung cancer.
Can you get hooked on marijuana ?

Marijuana use disorder becomes addiction when the person cannot stop using the drug even
though it interferes with many aspects of his or her life. Estimates of the number of people
addicted to marijuana are controversial, in part because epidemiological studies of substance use
often use dependence as a proxy for addiction even though it is possible to be dependent
without being addicted. Those studies suggest that 9 percent of people who use marijuana will
become dependent on it rising to about 17 percent in those who start using in their teens.
Why is the government
fighting legalization of
marijuana?
The Drug Enforcement Administration has announced its
decision It will keep marijuana in the same legal, regulatory
category as heroin schedule 1. Obviously, marijuana is
nowhere as dangerous as heroin. And it's not more
dangerous than schedule 2 drugs like cocaine and meth.
But the classification doesn't mean that the federal
government thinks of marijuana and heroin as equally
dangerous drugs. The schedule reflects a more
complicated system one that accounts for a drug's medical
value as much as a drug's potential for abuse.
Has there been a large-scale clinical trials on
marijuana
The FDA requires carefully conducted studies (clinical trials) in hundreds to thousands of
human subjects to determine the benefits and risks of a possible medication. So far,
researchers haven't conducted enough large-scale clinical trials that show that the benefits
of the marijuana plant (as opposed to its cannabinoid ingredients) outweigh its risks in
patients it's meant to treat.
Moreover, the causal relation between smoking pot and violent
Can marijuana behavior could be in exactly the opposite direction. That is,

cause acts of individuals who are involved in violence or who commit criminal
offenses may also be people who are more open to using
violence? marijuana. After all, marijuana is an illegal substance in most
places, so people with antisocial personality traits and those with
tendencies toward lawlessness may be the type of individuals
inclined to be more open to obtaining and using the illegal
substance. However, 20% of the boys who started using pot by age
18 continued to use it through middle age (32-48 years). One fifth
of those who were pot smokers (22%) reported violent behavior
that began after beginning to use cannabis, whereas only 0.3%
reported violence before using weed. Continued use of cannabis
over the lifetime of the study was the strongest predictor of violent
convictions, even when the other factors that contribute to violent
behavior were considered in the statistical analysis.
