VISUAL AIDS

DISCUSSANTS:
Arlene Pagana & Jercel Radones
Can you imagine a
seminar without the
use of
visual aids?
VISUAL AID
is something your audience
can see that aids your speech
content. Visual should be proof
read to ensure no errors or
discrepancies.
ADVANTAGES OF VISUAL AIDS:
 It is easier to hold the attention of the
audience towards you when you use
visual aids.
 Involvement and engagement of the
participants increases when you use
aids as they are hearing as well as
seeing.
 it is easier for the audience
to understand and remember the
information you provide.

 Correct usage of visual aids

also minimizes the chances of
any kind of mistakes.
DISADVANTAGES OF VISUAL AIDS:
 Firstly, having visual aids need a lot of
presentation material and preparation for the
same.
 Use of visual aids may also distract your
audience from your speech as they pay more
attention on the visual aids.
 Keep away from overly elaborated visual
aids.
POINTS TO CONSIDER
(in preparing visual aids)
Language and Content
 LANGUAGE the method of human communication, either spoken
or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and
conventional Way.
 CONTENT is another main lever of education quality. The
knowledge, skills and attitudes imparted by learning areas/subjects,
cross-cutting approaches and extra-curricular activities is a main
source of systematic and comprehensive learning.
 Improving teaching, learning
and assessment practices
 Teachers are more aware of
shifting from teaching language
forms and functions to skills and
strategies development of the
students. They paid more
attention to using language arts
and different text types to
1. FONT
 should be big enough to be seen
from the back of the venue
 titles should be in a large font than
the body of the information
 Keep similar text the same size
from one visual to the next.
2. COLOR
 Care should be taken in choosing
the colors for your presentation
especially if you will using slides.
 The tried and proven colors for
slides are white on blue and
black on white
Bridging the gap through
curriculum planning
Teachers have increased their awareness of
knowing what the curriculum required in
order to bridge the gap between primary and
secondary levels. They have a more holistic
view on increasing students’ language
exposure by integrating the formal and
informal curricula.
There were gaps identified in
the communication between
the curriculum, teaching
pedagogy and students’
learning.
3. BACKGROUND
- The background should
form a contrast in
relation to the text given.
Improving teaching, learning and assessment practices
Teachers are more aware of shifting from teaching
language forms and functions to skills and strategies
development of the students. They paid more
attention to using language arts and different text
types to increase their students’ language exposure.
Having exchanging ideas and discussion after inter-
school lesson observation, the secondary teachers
found that more could be done on developing
secondary students’ vocabulary building strategies as
their vocabulary bank was rather limited. In addition,
different activities can be designed to cater for learner
diversity.
Teachers have increased their awareness of
knowing what the curriculum required in order to
4. LAYOUT
 the slide should not be
overcrowded with information

 Information should be spaced

so that it is easy to read
IMPROVING TEACHING, LEARNING AND
ASSESSMENT PRACTICES
TEACHERS ARE MORE AWARE OF SHIFTING
FROM TEACHING LANGUAGE FORMS AND
FUNCTIONS TO SKILLS AND STRATEGIES
DEVELOPMENT OF THE STUDENTS. THEY PAID
MORE ATTENTION TO USING LANGUAGE ARTS
AND DIFFERENT TEXT TYPES TO INCREASE THEIR
STUDENTS’ LANGUAGE EXPOSURE. HAVING
EXCHANGING IDEAS AND DISCUSSION AFTER
INTER-SCHOOL LESSON OBSERVATION, THE
SECONDARY TEACHERS FOUND THAT MORE
COULD BE DONE ON DEVELOPING SECONDARY
STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY BUILDING STRATEGIES
5. TEXT
Use point form or short simple phrases
instead of sentences or paragraphs

Using all capital is hard to read

therefore use a combination of upper
and lower case lettering.
Each visual should have:
 one main point
 one thought per line
 no more than 5-7 words per line
 no more than 5-7 lines per visual
6. GRAPHS and TABLES
-Graphs and tables are the best
way to summarize large
quantities of raw data
You should note the following:
 simplify the data
 show only the essential
information
 be consistent in style and
terminology, font and color
You should note the following:
 frames, grid lines, and error
bars should be lighter in color
and weight
 X and Y axis lines should end at
the last data point.
 include legends
REMEMBER:
In public speaking i.e.
seminar/workshop, when a speaker
speaks in front of the audience, he
not only puts his ideas in the
form of words but may also use
many other visual aids.
REMEMBER:

“Well-designed visuals do more

than provide information; they
bring order to the conversation.”
- Dale Ludwig
 To sum up, we may say that an appropriate use
of visual aids can give your presentation a really
superior turn.
 On the other hand, if you pay more attention on
the aids than on your speech, they may
overshadow you in the eyes of the addressees
and seize all the attention of the audience.
THANK YOU
