1. Background.
2. Need of study.
3. Research Objective.
4. Methodology.
5. Expected Outcomes
1. BACKGROUND :
• 1994 Northridge Earthquake – it was found that the locations of plastic hinges revealed by the
second-“mode” pushover analysis matched closely with the observed damage.
the roof displacement may reverse direction after initiation of yielding during a higher-“mode” pushover
analysis, “reversal ”. in the pushover curve, was found to occur during the third-“mode” pushover analysis
of a three story steel moment-resisting frame building.
2. NEED OF STUDY :
As per ATC-40, capacity curve is generally constructed for predominant first mode response of
structure up to 1 sec fundamental period, with regular and no obvious weak/soft storey.

But, reviewing catalogue of Earthquake, Near fault(NF) ground motion may affect
our structure, which contains predominant period relative to higher modes period,
and also velocity pulse which may excite for higher modes response contribution to
total response.

Generally most of existing building in major city is 4/5 storey and their strength and
stiffness got degraded due to age, and intense GM, thus its time period may crosses 1
sec, also weak/soft storey also increases time period significantly.

Damping may be non-classical so that each mode response is affected by

other higher modes.

3. RESEARCH OBJECTIVE:

• For fixed seismic hazard level, to calculate coefficient for varying time period of structure which will be
used to increase seismic demand (storey drift/roof displacement) imposed by unimodal pushover
analysis.
• Verification of no of modes selected in Modal Pushover Analysis MPA) analysis with Non-linear
Response History Analysis (NRHA)
• Interpretation of local plastic hinge mechanism for higher modes with time period variation.

4. METHODOLOGY :
1) Selection and Modeling of Building for Analysis:
Papers related to the parametric non linear analysis is to be read to select the building which will show
characteristic result for modal analysis. Modeling of the building will be done in SAP2000 V20.0.2 and the design
will be done as per IS 456:2000 and for linear structure. Then the designed section will be modelled in CSI
PERFORM 3D for non- linear analysis.
2) Selection of Ground Motion:
Ground motion should be selected.which will be fixed for calculation.

3) Non-Linear Static Analysis:

There are lots of literature related to non-linear static analysis. FEMA -273, ATC-40, FEMA-356 provides
guidelines for the definition of hinges and carrying out the static non-linear pushover analysis to obtain
the pushover curve. For our analysis purpose Finite Element Software, SAP2000 V20.0.2, will be used and
hinges will be defined according to ASCE 41-13.
4) Interpretation of Plastic Hinge formatin mechanism and determination of coefficient:
Different no of modes will be incorporated to determine capacity curve will be verified by non-linear time history
analysis and then demand change coeff. for each time period will be formulated and will be adjusted for
unimodal capacity curve to adjust seismic demand. For each time period of building, plastic hinge mechanism will
be interpreted and shown.
5. Expected Outcomes:

• Demand change coeff. vs time period

• Plastic hinge mechanism vs time period.
