DAY 1
Say your point of view on
the following:
(Health and Wellness)
People who practice good
health behaviors are
healthier than those
people who do not
practice such behaviors;
thus, healthier people
requires less health care.
When healthy people do
require health care, they
are less likely to require
very expensive
treatment.
Healthy people recover
from illness more rapidly
when they do get ill.
VALUE: It is everyone’s best
interest to engage in a personal
lifestyle that encourages healthy
behaviors. Developing a healthy
behavior is easily accomplished if
the individual possesses the
motivation for developing
behaviors and the knowledge and
skills to develop and practice those
health behaviors.
Putting it as a priority Getting a lifestyle that is health Knowing and learning how
conscious to be healthy

Physical education
is the sum of changes in the
individual caused by
experiences centering on
motor activity.
(Cassidy)
Activities that entails movement
Physical education
is that phase of whole field
of education that deals
with big muscle activities.
(J.B.Nash)
Exercises, Fitness Programs,
Physical education
is the sum of man’s physical
activities selected as to kind
and conducted as to
outcomes.
(J.F.Williams & C.L.Brownell)
There is careful planning and selection of activities
Physical Education
is the sum of
those experiences which
comes to individual through
movements.
(Oberteuffer)
Just like Casidy, PE are experiences of movement.
Indian View
Physical education is education. It is the
education through physical activities
for the development of the total
personality of the child to its fullness
and perfection in body, mind and
spirit.
(Central Advisory Board of Physical
Education and Recreation)
Wholesome view on PE. It is perfection.
Meaning:
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
• is an integral part of the total
education process.
• and has as its aims ...... the development
of... physically, mentally, socially &
emotionally fit citizens through the medium
of physical activities that have been selected
and planned to achieve specific outcomes.
OBJECTIVES OF
PHYSICAL
EDUCATION
1. Physical Development
• Development of organ systems such
as circulatory system, nervous system,
muscular system ,digestive system.
• Development in size ,shape and
efficiency of organic systems due to
effects of physical activities which are
performed.
2. Mental Development
• Various physical activites need alertness of
mind, deep concentration and calculated
movements.
• Through participation in various activities
individual learns to draw certain
conclusions.
• Able to understand and faced situations in
game.
You will exercise the power, functions of your brain
3. Social Development
• Related to the development of social traits.
• Everyone needs leadership qualities.
• Players come closer to each other inspite of
differences in culture, places etc.
• Better source of attaining qualities like
fairplay, cooperation, sympathy,
sportsmanship, courtesy etc.
4. Neuro-Muscular Co-ordination
• Concerned with better relationship
between nervous system and muscular
system.
• Accuracy and smooth function of our
body.
• Keep off fatigue during physical
activities.
PHYSICAL FITNESS
Physical Fitness means the ability
to carry one’s work load without
staggering and to participate in
recreation with ease and enjoyment
and still have a reservoir of endurance
to meet the emergencies of life. It is a
condition whereby the systems of the
body are able to function at their
optimal efficiency.
Components of Physical
Fitness
1.Cardio-respiratory endurance
It is the ability of the heart, blood
vessels, and the lungs to deliver
essential nutrients, and especially
oxygen, to the working muscles and to
remove waste materials from the body.
It is the body’s ability to take in and
process the amount of oxygen that is
needed for a demanding physical task
for long periods.
2.Strength
Is the ability of a muscle
or muscle group to exert
one maximal force against
a resistance. It is that
factor of motor fitness that
allows a person to
overcome a resistance
through muscular
exertion.
3.Muscular endurance
Is the ability of the muscle or group
to exert repeated muscular
contractions against a resistance for
an extended period of time as in
performing push-ups, sit-ups, or half
squats. It is distinguished from
cardio-respiratory endurance in the
body systems or systems being
stressed - the heart, lungs, and blood
vessels are stressed in cardiovascular
activities such as the arms and
shoulder muscles in push-ups are
stressed in muscular endurance
activities.
4.Joint flexibility
Is the ability of the joints to
move throughout the full range
of motion. Flexibility is specific
to each joint and is limited
primarily by the structure of the
joint.
5.Body composition
Is the relationship between
fat tissue and lean body
tissue such as muscle,
bone, blood, skin and
organs. It refers to the lean
body weight (mass) and
body fat (adipose tissue).
Recommended body
composition for males is
less than 15 percent body
We are aiming to achieve a certain
fat. body composition
Specific Skills Related
Components of Physical
Fitness
(Associated with a high degree of
athletic ability)
a. Speed - is the ability to make
successive movements of the same kind in
the shortest possible period of time.
b. Power - refers to the muscular power
which is the ability to release maximum
force in the shortest possible time.
c. Agility - Is the ability to change position
or direction with quickness and lightness of
movement.
d.Balance - Is the ability to control organic
equipment nueromuscularly; it is a state of
equilibrium. The 3 aspects of balance are:
1.Static balance - which is the ability to maintain
equilibrium in a fixed position
2.Dynamic balance - which is maintaining
balance while moving or engaging an action
3.Rotational balance - which is the ability to
maintain or regain balance after turning,
rolling or other maneuvers while not in contact
in the floor or apparatus.
e. Coordination - refers to the
harmonious functioning of muscles
in producing complex movements.
f. Reaction time - refers to the
interval of time between the signal
to respond (stimulus) and the
beginning of the response.
Benefits
of
Physical
Fitness
1.Vitality - Muscle are basic in all body
action. They increase in strength with
activity and deteriorate from lack of it.
2.Posture - a physically fit person is able
to maintain his general postural alignment
better than with weak musculature. Good
fitness as a program stresses the
development of anti gravity muscles which
maintains good abdominal wall and the
arm shoulder girdle.
3.Relieve low-back pain - A lack of physical
activity has been found to be the major cause for
some cases of pain in the lower back. Most
adults who suffer from low back pain are
relieved from this pain by exercise that
strengthen their back and abdominal muscles.
4.Retards ageing process - continued
participation in regular exercise in regular
exercises of the proper amount and the severity
is considerable value in postponing deterioration
that usually takes place as person grows old.
5.Physical fitness - the body that is accustomed to
sedentary living habits can usually operate
ineffectively even though it is operating at near
maximum effort.
6.Neuromuscular skill - the smooth, efficient
coordination of muscular system is improved as a
result of regular participation in muscular activity.
7.Relaxation - overactive minds in underactive
bodies often need physical outlets for
accumulated emotional and muscular tensions
that seem to be relieved by action of the skeletal
muscles.
8.Improvement of personality -
participation in games and sports aids in
improving the personality and in developing
the desirable social skills.
9.Mental Fitness - because of the mental
and physical relaxation that often results
from physical activity, regular exercise is
thought by many to be of considerable
value in aiding the mental processes to
function by many with increased efficiency.
10.General health - the
physically person usually
possesses a high degree of
general resistance which
enables him to successfully
avoid minor illnesses.
